“With Maria and Gabby? I think they’ll do alright.”

“Me too.”

I just alleviated a bit more of her guilt, which I’m happy to do. She’s had a hard life, whether you argue it’s by her own hand or not, Joey was a real asshole of a human. Poisoned for many years, and still winding up this beautiful and free? Alessia deserves a medal. Or at least, the best life I can give her.

“Hello to you, Mr. and Mrs. Daland.” The agent bows when he greets us.

There she goes again, blushing.

“Yes, hello. As we spoke, I’ll be buying all cash, want something tucked into the trees, decently spaced from neighbors, and on a dead-end street where no one has any reason to bother us,” I speak firmly, making the agent gulp.

“O—of course, sir. I have a plentiful day lined up for you.”

“I’ll also need a car. Nothing fancy.”

“Y—yes sir, it will be done.” The agent snaps for his colleague to come over and help.

We visit three houses in the span of two hours, and each one is a bit more luxurious than the last. It’s not until the fourth do I see a true spark in Alessia’s eyes. Her mouth is agape as we walk past the gate to a beautiful in-ground pool scattered with rocks and a tiny waterfall. The exposed black pillars seem sturdy, and the high windows on each of the two floors will take some getting used to, but if this is what makes my love’s heart tick, then that’s what it will be.

“Oh my God.” She pulls me into a room on the second floor. The wood floor is freshly sanded, and the light hits the room just so through the windows. “Wouldn’t it be perfect for the baby? Imagine a crib here, and a little couch so I can sit when I need to. Right?”

“My kid should be in the dungeon, with me,” I joke.

“Shut up.” She pushes me. “Oh, do you like it? Please say yes. This is the one, wolf.”

I turn to the agent, who’s lingering in the other room. “What’s the list price?”

“Seven-hundred-fifty. There’re two other bidders, though, I must warn y—”

“That’s enough,” I say. “We’ll take it.”

Sia squeals, and my heart does a few somersaults that I’d never show outwardly.

“Closing tomorrow afternoon, all cash. Make it happen,” I demand.

“Yes, sir.” He rushes away to make phone calls, and I turn to Sia wrapping her arms around my neck and reaching up to kiss me.

“Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.” The love she emits almost makes the scorching air worth it. Almost.

“Love you, Sia.”

“You too, wolf.”

Alessia

When I’m done fantasizing on how to best position the furniture in the baby room—Ah, who am I kidding? I’d be fantasizing all day if Leandro’s deep voice didn’t pull me back to reality. What’s he hollering about down there?

I rush to the front window on the second floor of our future house, to see the agent scurrying away.

“Hey, where’s he going?” I yell.

“I told him to go get our damn car and bring it here now,” he says from downstairs. “Sia, come down here.”

“What?” I start to head to the steps.

He doesn’t answer, and I’m curious what he’s found. Something wrong with the house? God, I hope not. I need this place in my life. I need—
