“Leandro?” my voice cracks. “Did I piss you off, or something?”

“You didn’t try to escape. Not once.”

I shake my head, at a loss. “Well… you didn’t call me up in two weeks. Not once,” I fire back.

He wanted me to run. Should I take that as a compliment?

The deafening silence coaxes me to think otherwise. It’s making me uncomfortable in my own skin just to recall the fantasies I’ve been relishing in.

Stupid. Stupid. Stupid, Alessia.

I still can’t get over how hot he looks dressed up, though.

“Got a hot date?” I hold my nose as we head toward the back of the shack.

“A job required me to blend in,” he says. “An overnight scout.”

“Ah, so that’s why the latches were on all of yesterday,” I say. “Anabel was so disappointed.”

“Hmph,” he grunts.

“So you’re taking jobs again,” I say. “Was curious about that, since you and Donny left on such bad terms last I saw you.”

He narrows his eyes while holding the back door for me. “Don’t pretend like you ladies don’t gossip. You know damn well I’ve been taking jobs since last week.”

I smile facetiously at him. “Well, maybe I just like to hear it straight from the horse’s mouth. God forbid one of us makes a bit of conversation.”

We step outside to the brisk air. Not too long ago, I’d complain it’s too cold and wrap myself in three blankets. But now? I look forward to it. The sky is beautiful, streaked with white brush strokes, and the trees waving make me think of old ski trips my parents used to take me on.

“So what made you call me up today? Since you’re obviously mad at me.”

Leandro walks to the car covered with an unassuming grey tarp and whips it off. “I need your help. Get in.”

I bite my bottom lip as I quietly stroll over to the passenger’s side and take my seat.

When he falls into the driver’s side, he takes one glance at me while starting the car. I have no idea what he’s thinking, but those hazel eyes twist my insides like no man ever has. With Joey, it was all fear of stepping out of line. But with Leandro… I want him to tackle me.

The car rumbles to life, and before I know it, we’re speeding onto the dirt road. My eyes wander to the spot I met Arnold weeks ago. There’s no sign of him anywhere, but maybe that’s on purpose.

Soon, I’ll be free, Leandro.

I eye his lips, and notice him catch me out of the corner of his eye.

“Well, are you going to keep me in suspense?” I ask.

He licks his teeth and tilts his head, saying nothing. The other women were right, he’s acting way different than normal.

“Hey! What’s with you?” I jar him out of his daze. “Since you know we all talk. Every single one, even Maria, said you’ve been acting weird. You’re not going to go all psycho and burn the whole place down, are you?” I push him to wake him up.

“Cut it out.” He catches my hand, and sparks immediately fly. His thumb grazes over my knuckles before he lets me go.

I can’t help it. I’m already getting warm down there just from his touch.

Fuck.

“Are you still in danger?” I ask.

“A little bit less,” he smirks. I guess that means he got the jump on one of them.
