I’m running now, past another set of double doors and back into the public lobby.

Chapter 30

Leandro

It’s me they want. No one knows who she is.

I knew I was dead the moment Carlo locked eyes on me from across the way. Someone reported to him, for sure. My eyes fall on the seemingly innocent man across the table, then to the others who noticed Alessia sobbing nearby. It could’ve been any of them.

No point to dwell. It’s over. I’m caught.

It’s a damn shame, though. We were so close to starting again. Two wounded animals stitched up, about to be set free in the wild. I’m sorry, Sia. Don’t hate me too much… You are my everything now; you and our unborn child. But you’ll have to fly on without me.

Two muscly goons make their way to my table from opposite sides of the reception, eyes only on me. I’m not going to run or make a scene, because every second they’re focused here, is one Alessia gets farther away from harm.

I’ve been in this business long enough to know how this goes.

It was a mistake to bring such a beautiful distraction, in such a crowded off-the-cuff job. I betrayed my own ways by coming here for a pipe dream.

Boom. One of the men punch the table, scaring Benny and the bimbo out of their seats.

“We need a word with our late guest,” the bigger of the two men say.

“You alright, John?” Benny asks to my surprise.

I just give him a half smirk and a nod. Humanity shocks me sometimes. Guess it wasn’t him who ratted me out.

I look at the two enforcers who pull up chairs they barely fit in. It’s in this moment I realize for the first time, I don’t want to die. I wasn’t finished here.

“Don Carlo said you look like a person of interest.” The bigger man drops his massive arm on the table, weighing it down.

“I didn’t know the Don swung that way.” I lean back in my chair, unbothered.

My heart rate is always calm in tense situations. A gift and a curse. I guess my father beat the anxiety out of me. Why am I thinking of him now? Some last minute reflecting?

“Not wise to disrespect the boss of the Barone family,” the smaller giant says.

Their frames overwhelm my view of the reception. I wonder if they’re doing this on purpose so the target can escape.

“The Don can’t handle his problem like a man?” I tilt my head to better see if he got up from his seat, and the smaller giant lunges for my arm so I stay put.

“No sudden movements, Hook. You’re too dangerous for that.”

I give the enforcer a moment to shine, before I slip out of his grip and break one of his fingers. A scream is drowned out by the DJ pumping the music again, and I shake my head at the big boy, holding a silenced pistol under the table, aimed right at his crotch.

“Since I’m a dead man, maybe I should take down a few meatheads on my way out.” I narrow my eyes at the giant, still twisting the wrist of the smaller one until his head is flush against the tablecloth.

The giant bares his teeth at me, but I lean right in to test him.

“Never shot somebody in the dick before. Are you as curious as I am to see what happens? Want to test my trigger finger, enforcer?”

“We have eyes on your woman,” he says brazenly.

“The fuck do I care? She’s an escort.”

My heart rate rises for the first time in distress, and I wonder if I’m turning into something human. On my last fucking day, I lose my killer instinct. Go figure.

Two more men head toward my table, and others are starting to notice.
