“Now I walk away. But first, I need to give you instructions.”

“Instructions?”

“Da. If Alonzo Cavallaro is dead, and I suspect he is, then you will not allow Decker Langdon to be taken into custody. No questions, no fingerprints, no DNA test. Get rid of his gun and give him this one.” She held out her own gun once again, and when Nico took it, she backed away. He could shoot her if he felt so inclined, but she must have known he wouldn’t. “When the deputies ask, you tell them I did the deed.”

“Aren’t you afraid they’ll catch you?”

Her laugh was oddly melodic. “Afraid? No, I’m never afraid. And if you think they’ll look hard for me, then you’re mistaken. They like having me around to do what they can’t.”

“Who is this gun registered to?”

Another laugh. “A ghost.”

She headed deeper into the forest, away from the road, but Nico didn’t question her sense of direction. This was a woman who knew exactly what she was doing in every facet of her life. Instead, he watched her for a moment as she strode confidently in black leather pants. Her ass wasn’t as good as Kaylin’s but…but there was something vaguely familiar about it. Nico had seen her somewhere before… From behind…

Holy fuck.

Could it be?

“Hey, wait. Viktoria?”

She didn’t run, and she didn’t slow. No, she just kept walking at the same steady pace. Had she heard him?

Was he wrong?

She gave a little wave over her shoulder.

Yes, she’d heard him.

And he was right.

He wanted to dash after her, to thank the woman who’d changed the course of his life, but he couldn’t, not with Matty in his arms. And Kaylin was waiting.

His family.

They were the priority.

He let the Bad Samaritan go.

KAYLIN

I crawled away and puked into the dirt, then retched some more. I was already covered in blood and brains and who knew what else—what did a little vomit matter?

“You okay, ma’am?”

I didn’t recognise the voice, but I didn’t care. The man had just shot Alonzo, so as far as I was concerned, he was a hero. He offered me a hand, and I scrambled to my feet. Then I kicked my former brother-in-law in the balls. Hard. Twice. Yes, he was dead, but it was still satisfying.

Then I puked again because half of his head was missing.

“He’s gone.”

“I know that.” I finally focused on my saviour, and although the voice was unfamiliar, the face wasn’t. He’d been measuring things in Nico’s yard last week. Was he some kind of undercover bodyguard Nico hadn’t told me about? “My son. I need to find my son. Where’s Matty?”

“I’ll take you back to the road, and then I’ll go after him.”

“No. No! Don’t take me anywhere; just find my son.”
