“I’m so sorry that happened to you.”

“Alain showed me that there are still good men in the world. Anyhow, that night, I mixed Benadryl into Wyatt’s dinner and snuck out the back door with next to nothing.”

“What time did you arrive at the Bluebird Inn?”

“Nine thirty? Or ten? It took a while for Wyatt to fall asleep.”

“Did you see anyone else in the parking lot? There was a dark grey Toyota parked outside room sixteen, right next to yours, and that’s the vehicle that was involved in the accident.”

“Maybe? I don’t remember much about the car, only the man getting into it.”

“You saw a man?”

“Outside the room next to mine. The parking lot was mostly empty that night, and he reminded me of Wyatt. Tall, dark hair, a goatee. I thought at first it was Wyatt, and I just about had a coronary. Then I wondered if he was stealing the car because he seemed kinda furtive, but he must’ve had a key because he drove off pretty fast.”

We had a witness. We had a freaking witness, and she’d just described Alonzo Cavallaro.

“Do you think that you could pick the man out if you saw him again?”

“I-I don’t think I’d want to see him. What if he’s dangerous?”

“It would be a photo line-up. The main suspect actually passed away recently, so the police can’t question him.”

“I guess? As long as I don’t need to go back to Virginia. I heard Wyatt got married, but he’ll still be bitter. That man holds a grudge like no other.”

“We’ll be able to arrange a meeting that’s convenient for you.” I didn’t like to take advantage of my relationship with Ford, but he’d help out if a woman’s freedom was at risk. “I hope you found happiness after you left.”

“I did. It took a while, but I trained as a vet tech, and my new man has four legs and a tail that never stops wagging.”

“I’ll bet he doesn’t leave laundry all over the floor either.”

Ellen giggled. “He’s very well trained. Alain can give you my number if you want to arrange the photo thing.”

“I appreciate your help more than you can ever know.”

“That lady shouldn’t be in jail. Alain told me her name, and I searched on the internet. Kaylin. I think I saw her too, right as I arrived. She was crossing the street toward the gas station. I remember because she looked the way I felt. Scared.”

“You might be thousands of miles away, but I really want to give you a hug right now.”

“If you’re ever in Laconia, maybe we could get a coffee?”

“I’d like that.”

We had our witness, and Kaylin was safe. Well, safe-ish. Would the Cavallaro family let her be, or would they go all out for revenge? Nico had hired extra security, I knew that much. He was Blackwood’s best customer at the moment.

Thibault tucked his phone back into his pocket and handed me a can of bug spray.

“Here, use this. The guide is waiting.”

KAYLIN

“The charges have been dropped.”

Aaron Bartlett stood in my hospital room, arms folded as he delivered the news. He didn’t seem particularly happy, but I couldn’t blame him. I’d nearly gotten his sister killed. Brooke didn’t seem to bear the same grudge, seeing as she’d convinced him to represent me, and for that I was truly grateful.

“The charges against me? In Manassas?”
