“Yeah, well, that’s not how she said it. I don’t think her mum shopped at Whole Foods.”

“Can’t blame her for that.” Emmy shuddered. “So many lentils, so few E numbers. Are you peeps joining us?”

Ana shook her head. “I have a PTO meeting.”

“Yikes. Try not to murder anyone. It’s the best preschool in the area, plus I’m too busy to bury a body. Dasha?”

“I’m having lunch with Alex.”

“Nice. Enjoy your grilled chicken.”

Why the sarcasm? There was nothing wrong with grilled chicken. It was healthier than a cheeseburger, at any rate.

“At least I won’t die from blocked arteries.”

“Eh, I doubt I’ll live long enough for that to happen. Why do you think I don’t do Botox? Every wrinkle is a reminder that I’ve made it through another year.”

The door opened, and Dan walked in with a man I didn’t recognise. She made the introductions.

“Nick, this is Dasha. Dasha, meet Nick. He’s one of the head honchos at this circus.” Then that would make him a ringmaster, not a honcho. “Did somebody mention blocked arteries?”

“I’m going to the diner with Sky,” Emmy said. “Wanna come?”

“I’ll have to meet you there. Gotta go through the sim first, and then I need to juggle the workloads in the New York office because we picked up six new cases this morning, and we didn’t close any of the old ones yet.”

“Anything looking hopeful?”

“Maybe. Hallie thinks she might’ve found Kaylin La Rocca, which would free up a chunk of Collier’s time.”

“Oh yeah? Being honest, I thought that was a lost cause.”

“Me too, but she just briefed me, and there’s a lot of circumstantial evidence on their side.”

“Are we talking alive or dead?”

“Alive and married to a wise guy from Tribeca.”

“When you say ‘wise guy,’ are we talking about a stand-up comedian or a Mafioso?”

“The second one. I told her to watch her back. She hasn’t managed to get a good look at the woman yet, so that’s the next step.”

Emmy groaned. “Fuck my life, she’s gonna get kidnapped again, isn’t she? I’d better get Sloane to clear my schedule.”

“She’ll have Collier with her.”

“The same Collier who blew a month-long surveillance operation when he decided to break cover and chase a mugger six city blocks?”

“At least he caught the guy.”

“It would’ve been cheaper to buy the woman a new damn handbag.”

“He learned from that mistake.”

“I bloody well hope he did. Hallie’s been through enough shit in the last year, and if he does something dumb around the Mafia, they’re gonna start shooting, not leg it through the back alleys of Brooklyn.”

“You want me to assign somebody else?”

“Is there somebody else?”
