“I might have guessed a politician was involved,” I said. “Nobody enters a life of public service to serve the public. They only serve themselves.”

“Are you interested in playing the Bad Samaritan again?”

“I’ll do some groundwork. See what’s possible.”

“If you need resources, let me know. I don’t much like politicians either. One or two of them are okay, but Congress is ninety-five percent cuntwaffles.”

For years, all I’d wanted to do was work alone, but now I understood the difference between a competent team and a good team. My former colleagues had been competent, but half of them had suffered from severe personality defects. Emmy’s team was…better.

“Can you get the file from the investigation in question? Details always help.” Although I did have a certain amount of inside information in this instance, thanks to my former employer—an old man who loved to talk—and an idea was already forming at the back of my mind. A way to kill two birds with one stone by leveraging one culprit’s guilt to frame another…

“No problem.”

“And I’ll need to build up a picture of the targets’ lives. Their regular movements.”

“We can cover the Virginia end. Incidentally, you might want to watch your back in Baldwin’s Shore. There’s another allegedly retired operator in town.”

“Decker Langdon?”

“Right.” She seemed disappointed that I was already aware. “I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised that you know.”

“I see it in him.”

“He’s ex-Delta. Had a disagreement with a commanding officer and went AWOL. Would’ve been court-martialled, but they couldn’t find him.”

I wasn’t sure how I felt about that. Desertion was unprofessional, the worst crime for a soldier, sailor, or airman, but those who lived in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. It was only thanks to my untimely “death” that I had a cosy little cottage on Valley Drive and my hideaway cabin in the forest. If I’d stayed, I’d most likely have joined my mentor in hell by now.

“What were the circumstances?”

“I’m still looking into that. Everything’s buried deep. I only know his name and the basics because one of my circle recognised his photo.”

I wasn’t about to ask where she’d obtained the picture. Deck didn’t use social media, I knew that much.

“I’ll watch my back.”

“How’s the new motorbike?”

“Fun. And it would be more fun if you’d get off the phone so I could ride it.”

“Hint taken. Enjoy scaring the local wildlife.”

“Enjoy eating junk food and driving your husband insane.”

“Thanks, honey. See you soon.”

“Whatever.”

I shoved the phone back into my pocket and picked up my nail gun. Emmy was an acquired taste, that was for sure, but I didn’t find her as unpalatable as I once had. Plus she’d brought Alex into my life and ensured he could stay there, which meant I was in her debt, even if I’d never admit as much.

For now, I had to focus on the Sara Baldwin conundrum. Taking out a politician was nothing new for me, but these things always took planning, patience, and a certain amount of creativity.

The Bad Samaritan had another game to play.
