“I appreciate it.”

“We should probably—”

“You hungry?” he asked suddenly.

I blinked. “Yeah.”

“Let’s grab dinner.”

We walked to my car in silence. He opened the driver’s side door for me and closed it once I’d gotten in.

I started the vehicle, but Smoke hadn’t come around to the passenger side yet. He pulled out his cell, pressed a button, and then put the phone to his ear. Smoke began walking down the sidewalk away from the car so I couldn’t hear the conversation. His expression said enough. I assumed he was talking to Colt.

After a few minutes, Smoke hung up and came back to the car.

“Everything okay?” I asked hesitantly.

Smoke nodded.

“What do you want to eat?” I asked.

“Your choice.”

My phone buzzed and because it was connected to Bluetooth, the computerized voice chanted, “Call from Bones.”

I silenced the call and hastily looked at Smoke.

“Why is Bones calling you?” Smoke demanded.

“Because he still wants to show me around town.”

“I thought you were going to stay away from him.”

“What gave you that idea?”

“Because I told you he wasn’t a good guy.”

“You’re not a good guy,” I pointed out. “And I didn’t stay away from you, did I?”

“That’s different.”

“Why do you care if I spend time with Bones?” I pressed. “I’m an adult and I can make my own decisions.”

He was silent for a long a moment and then he said, “You’re right. Spend time with whoever you want.”

“Fine, I will.”

We drove back to the bakery in silence, and parted ways without so much as a goodbye.

Chapter 28

I set my dirty dinner plate into the sink and washed my hands. As I was drying them on a dishrag, the buzzer for the back door downstairs went off.

With a frown I went to see who’d shown up randomly without calling. I hadn’t been expecting anyone, so I couldn’t even imagine who it was.

I pressed the intercom button. “Hello?”

“It’s me.”
