“Looks good,” he said, setting his beer aside.

“You want to sit on the couch to eat?” I inquired.

“Nope. Here’s good.” He picked up the sandwich and took a bite. Smoke closed his eyes and momentarily ceased chewing.

When he opened his eyes and looked at me, I smirked. “Told ya.”

He didn’t say anything until he polished off the last of his grilled cheese. “I’m gonna need one of those every night I’m here. It’s just become my new obsession.”

I grinned. “Will make grilled cheese for orgasms.”

“Sign me up.” He polished off the rest of the beer and threw the bottle away. Then he began to tackle the dishes.

“You don’t have to clean up,” I said.

He looked at me and frowned. “You cooked. I clean. Those are the rules.”

“Okay,” I agreed. “But I need a baby grilled cheese. Watching you eat yours kinda whet my appetite.”

He arched a brow.

I rolled my eyes. “Not everything has to be dirty.”

“But it’s more fun that way.”

I ate my sandwich as I watched him stand at the sink and do the dishes. When he was finished, he grabbed the dishrag and dried his hands.

“What?” he asked, raising a brow.

“Nothing.” I finished the last of my sandwich. I was fully satiated and relaxed.

“Nah, come on, what is it?”

“Where did you learn to wash dishes?” I asked.

“You mean, since I was a little rich boy with a butler; where did I learn such a skill?”

“You had a butler?” I asked in surprise.

“Yeah.”

“Oh. Wow. Okay.”

“I worked as a dishwasher in a restaurant as a second job to keep the lights on when Tavy was little.”

He tossed the dishrag aside and leaned against the counter.

“Does she know?”

“Know that I used to work two jobs to keep her and her mom safe and warm? I don’t know. Maybe.”

I shook my head. “I meant, did she know what you gave up?”

He paused for a moment and ran a hand along his scruffy jaw. “She knows about how I grew up. But it’s one thing to know it and it’s another thing to know it. See it, I mean. She never saw it since I wasn’t close with my parents.”

“Because of her, right? You chose to be her father over being their son. You gave up their money and a life of obligation because she was born.”

“Money isn’t everything.”
