My gaze whipped to his. “Fine. Thanks.”
“You’re liking your living situation?”
I nodded.
“Dating anyone?”
Tavy shot her dad a frown. “Why would you ask her that?”
He shrugged. “Just making polite conversation.”
“I’m thinking about joining a dating app,” I lied.
Tavy looked shocked. “Wait, what? Just last night you said you weren’t ready to date.”
I glanced at her and smiled. “I changed my mind.”
The server returned and asked if we were ready to order.
“We haven’t even looked at the menus yet,” Tavy said with an apology.
“I know what I want,” Smoke said, not taking his eyes off me.
Tavy reached for her menu. “Go ahead.”
“Burger medium rare, bleu cheese, side of fries.”
“Great,” the server said. He looked at me. “Do you know what you’d like?”
“She can’t choose between a burger or a salad,” Smoke said before I could talk. “She thinks she should have the salad because it’s a healthier choice, even though she really wants a burger.”
Tavy looked at him in confusion. “That’s a strange thing to say.”
“He’s right,” I said to Tavy. My smile had a little more teeth than usual. “He knows exactly what’s going on in my head. I’m impressed, Smoke. So why don’t you order for me.”
“Nah, I’d never take away your choice,” he said. He took a long pull of his beer. “You order.”
I wasn’t hungry and my stomach was in knots, but I looked at the server and smiled. “Do you have any smoked meat?”
“No. Sorry.”
“Hmm. Okay. Guess I’ll settle for a bowl of the soup of the day. I’m not really that hungry.”
Smoke arched a brow.
“Ma’am?” The server looked at Tavy.
“I’ll have the same thing as him. Thanks.”
We handed off our menus and the server flitted away.
“I need to use the restroom,” Tavy announced.
Smoke stood up to let her out.
When she disappeared down the hallway, I looked at Smoke and glared. “You’re a jack ass.”
“Am I?” he asked quietly. “What are you really doing here, Logan? I thought I was having dinner with my daughter. I had no idea you were tagging along.”
