My heart leapt thinking it might be Tavy.

But it wasn’t.

It was a text from Willa. I relaxed a bit and read the message.

Willa

Just reminding you about the baby shower tomorrow. I know it’ll be hard to tear yourself away from Smoke now that you two are back together. Word spreads fast through the Old Ladies’ grapevine.

I typed out a reply, grinning at the thought of getting to have some quality girl-talk about my reunion with Smoke. My smile slipped when I realized I wouldn’t ever get to gush to Tavy about how gooey I was over my new relationship.

I took the pie upstairs and stood at the kitchen counter to eat it.

Loneliness enveloped me. My best friend wasn’t speaking to me and I missed Smoke.

I set the empty plate in the sink and then picked up my cell to text Smoke and then just as quickly put it down. The last thing I wanted to do was appear needy.

“Fuck it.” I unlocked my phone and dialed his number. It rang twice before going to voicemail.

I hung up in frustration.

And then I called Rach.

“Hello?”

“Thank God you answered,” I blurted out.

“What’s wrong? Are you suffering from dehydration from all your physical activities with Smoke?”

“Ha-ha.”

“Oh come on, we’re dying for the story.”

“I’ll tell you at Brooklyn’s tomorrow.”

“So, what’s up? Why did you call?”

“I just didn’t want to be alone with my own thoughts.”

“Been there,” she said with a laugh.

“Is this a bad time?”

“No. I’m enjoying a cup of tea and contemplating watching a new show. But I’m not sure I’m ready for that kind of commitment.”

I sniggered.

“What’s going on?”

“Smoke and I met Tavy tonight. And we told her.”

“And how did that go?”

“She’s not talking to me. But at least she didn’t throw a cocktail in my face.”

“Thank heavens for small mercies.”

“Right?” I shook my head.
