“It’s your brother,” she said.

“Which one?”

“Grady.”

I swallowed. “Did you tell them what happened?”

“They were there when we got the phone call from Tavy.”

Tavy.

I hadn’t had time to think too hard about what was going on between us because of my overwhelming grief at the events of the past few days.

Mom’s cell went silent and then a moment later started buzzing again.

“Might as well take the call,” I said with a sigh. “He’ll just keep calling.”

“Yep.” She pressed a button and put the phone to her ear. “I’m with your sister and we’re having breakfast.” She paused and then said, “Okay.”

She unplugged the phone and walked to me. “He wants to talk to you.”

“I’m eating,” I said.

She arched a brow.

With a shake of my head, I took the phone. “Hi, Grady.”

“Logan,” he said, his tone gruff but soft. “Are you okay?”

My big brother had never been the terrorizing sort. He’d left that for Harlan and Chase. He’d been my protector, making it incredibly difficult to date in high school.

“I’m okay,” I said.

“Is Smoke with you?”

I frowned in confusion. “He’s sleeping.”

“Oh. Right. Well, when he wakes up, tell him I said thanks.”

“For what?”

“For killing the fucker and saving me the trouble.”

I bit my lip to stop my laugh. “I’ll tell him.”

“He sounds like a good one.”

“High praise, coming from you,” I joked.

“Can’t be too sure until I meet the guy in person.”

“Which won’t be for a while.”

“Not really…”

“Grady?” I pressed. “What do you mean not really?”

“Don’t worry about it.”
