“Unlike you, I survive off caffeine and spite. No crashing for me.”

I fell silent and Charlie returned with a glass of water and held it out to me.

“Thanks.” I took it and gulped the entire thing in a few swallows.

“So, what were you dreaming about?”

“He pulled the trigger,” I said quietly. “And then I floated out of my body, so I was staring down at the scene. And I watched him run away with my purse while my brain was splattered all over the cement.”

She blinked.

“Wishing you hadn’t asked?”

“Kinda.” She took a seat next to me. “But I’m definitely glad I stayed tonight. You shouldn’t be alone for a while.”

“You can’t stay with me all the time,” I pointed out. “What about tomorrow or the next night? Or the night after that?”

“You told me I could move in. Remember?”

“I remember.”

“But I don’t think I want to move in now that you’re dating a biker. Because I know I’m not gonna wanna hear you guys going at like primates in the jungle.”

I snorted out a laugh, causing Charlie to crack a grin. “I knew that would get you to laugh.” Her smile dimmed. “Maybe you need to see a shrink.”

“Maybe.”

“You won’t, will you?”

“I won’t,” I agreed.

“Why not?”

“Why won’t you see a shrink to talk about your issues?” I threw back at her.

“Okay, fair.” She cocked her head to the side. “Think you can go back to sleep?”

“Not any time soon.”

“Want to watch another movie?”

“No.”

“Want me help you pick out an outfit for tomorrow, so you look effortlessly amazing but not like you’re trying to look hot for Bones?”

“Absolutely.”

Chapter 11

I parked in front of Pie in the Sky and cut the engine. With a deep breath, I looked in my rearview mirror, checked my appearance one final time, and then climbed out of the car. Under-eye concealer only did so much when your sleep was erratic, and you’d had a slumber party with your best friend.

The bakery was warm and inviting. A woman with a long, dark braid wearing a pair of glasses stood behind the counter. She handed a man his change and a cup of to-go coffee.

Another customer stepped up to order.

I looked around the bakery for Bones. He was sitting at a corner table, his back facing the wall, his blue eyes locked on me.

His chin lowered ever so slightly, and I knew he was checking me out in my tight black jeans, ankle boots, and designer black and white chenille sweater.
