Her eyes locked on Mick’s she refused to give him the satisfaction of confirming she was even present.

“She’s almost as stubborn as you are.” Mick sounded impressed.

Without warning, he lifted the pistol and fired off a shot. It left her ears ringing at first but quickly was followed by a searing pain in her left shoulder that tore a scream from her mouth. “Ahh! Fuck!”

On the phone, a series of expletives were given by her father, though she didn’t hear exactly what they were as the sudden onslaught of pain throbbed across the upper left area of her body. A wet warmth followed as her light blue shirt began to soak up the blood escaping the small hole that was now in her shoulder.

“I’m sorry, what was that, Layne?” Mick inquired with an evil smirk across his face.

“Go to hell! Gah!” She screamed out again as it seemed to help nominally with the pain.

Mick’s voice was oozing with confidence now. “As I’m sure you can tell, Scotty, she’s not feeling too hot right now. Here is what is going to occur if you want her to have a quick and painless death, because let’s be straight with one another, she’s not leaving here in anything but a body bag. Don’t worry about missing out on this though, I will be sure to leave enough of her blood around the house so you’ll be cleaning it up for months.”

“I trusted and confided in you. You were treated as part of my family, and this is how you repay me?” Her father was gritting his teeth through his words.

Mick sighed with exhaustion evident in his voice. “All talk. Where was all my glory in this?! You coddled your kids, promising them riches and power, and what did my family get? Your eternal gratitude and a pat on the back?”

Layne drew in harsh and deep breaths as she tried to control the sensation of pain wracking her body.

Mick continued, “a pat on the back is just not going to be good enough. I want the offshore accounts all under my control. Then, you’re going to turn yourself into Boston PD while you’re up there and confess to every scheme you’ve ever been involved in. The Feds will come in and will lock your ass up and throw away the key for the past two years alone, while I pick up the fractured pieces of business operations here.”

“The accounts will take time, Mick, you know that,” Scott warned.

“I guess you will need to hurry and do what you can to make them take less time. I already have people on the way to the Four Seasons Downtown to see to it that Liam is seen buckling under the pressure of the business, turning to a tragic encounter with a fatal dose of heroin. As for Layne, well, she and I will have to find a way to pass the time.” The way he said the last few words made Layne’s skin crawl and a wave of nausea rolled through her stomach.

“Son of a bi?—”

Mick ended the call cutting off her dad’s words, and tossed the phone onto the table carelessly.

“You’re a coward. You had to wait until my dad was out of town to make your move? You couldn’t just face him directly like a man?” A sheen of sweat across her forehead from the nagging pain embedded in her shoulder. Her body involuntarily shook from a combination of adrenaline, anger, and agony.

His laughter abruptly burst out of him. “I’m ten times more of a man than your dad has ever been. Maybe I will show you before our time here is up.” He walked behind her, a hand gripping onto her injured shoulder.

Layne writhed as the deep ache flipped back into an intense shooting pain. Biting her lower lip, she tried not to cry out.

“Don’t hold back on my account.” He gave her shoulder another squeeze. “I won’t mind hearing you scream.”

Things went dark.

For a moment even Layne wasn’t sure if she had blacked out or not, but she blinked her eyes a few times and realized it was just the lights that cut out in the house.

Mick released her shoulder, and she could hear his footsteps as he moved away from her, murmuring to himself. “Damnit.”

She tried to will her eyes to adjust quicker to the dark, but it wasn’t happening fast enough. Her hands furiously tugged and pulled against the ropes holding her there to the chair. The burn of the ropes rubbing against her skin was nothing by comparison to what would happen if she didn’t get free.

That’s when she heard a thud come from the room above her. Instinctively, she looked up wondering if she truly had heard anything at all or if it had been her imagination, or possibly delirium. While her heart continued pounding in her body, she continued to fight against her restraints.

Mick’s footsteps were coming closer to her once more, she could feel his presence through the shadows. He stopped short, and suddenly all Layne heard were the sounds of two men grunting and Mick’s strangled voice. The movement of air wisped around her indicating there was a hell of a struggle going on.

The sound of a high-pitched shot pierced through the air. Layne flinched. No new pain that she could feel was reassuring that she hadn’t been injured again.

A large thump occurred next to her, the thump of a lifeless body. Whose body? She couldn’t be sure.

Hands settled on top of hers as the outline of a body appeared before her.

“Stop moving.” The masculinity dripping from the voice in front of her was unmistakable.

She froze in her seat. “Joey?” Her voice broke with a sudden surge of relief.
