“Mmhm, well, keep me posted, chica. I miss you,” she replies.

“Miss you more, girlie. Hurry home.”

“Two more months, Cassidy.”

“Good. Now, I’m out of here, Mags. I’ll let you know how it goes.”

Once I hang up, I quickly head into the bathroom and run a brush through my hair before braiding it. It’s getting long, but I don’t really know what I want to do with it, so other than the occasional trim, I’m letting it grow. Satisfied that I’m as ready as I can be, I grab my phone and slide it into my purse, giggling at the text that came through from Mags. She’s such a goofball, but I adore her.

I think about my discussion with my dad as I head over to Cassidy’s house. I need to find out what she majored in while in college, because I have a proposition for her.

Grinning, I look at the Coke that’s waiting for her, perfectly prepared with crushed ice and lemon, as I take my own tea in hand and suck some down. I’m excited for her to see the house I’m building; every aspect of it has been built with her in mind.

Grinning, I see her on the porch waiting for me, while her mom waves her hands around. Pulling to a stop, I put Hazel in park and get out, leaving her running as I walk toward the two women.

“Hey, Jared,” Mrs. Smith says as I get closer.

“Mrs. Smith, Cassidy,” I reply, my focus on the woman who has captivated me for years.

“You ready?” she asks me as I stop in front of her.

“Absolutely. Figured while we were out and about, we’d find something to eat as well,” I say, grinning down at her.

“Sounds good to me. Mom, I’ll see you later,” she says, kissing her mom’s cheek.

“You kids go and have a good time. I’ll leave the light on.”

“Just make sure you lock the door, Mom,” Cassidy teases. “You tend to forget to do that.”

Mrs. Smith waves us off, smiling. I take Cassidy’s hand in mine and walk back down the steps to the passenger side of my truck. Before I help her in, I touch my lips to hers while my hand brushes across her cheek. I see her face flush and grin as I close the door then round the front of my truck and hop into the driver’s seat.

“You ready, Freddy?” I tease as I put my seatbelt on.

“Punch it, Judy,” she fires back, grinning at me.

As we drive through town, I reach over and take her hand in mine, lacing our fingers together.

“Where are we going?” she asks as we leave Possum Run.

“I thought I’d show you the house I’m building,” I reply, glancing at her.

“You’re building a house?” she asks.

“Yeah, honey. Never planned to live at home the rest of my life,” I tease, causing her to giggle.

“So, tell me about your house,” she says.

“It’s a two-story farmhouse,” I reply. “Four bedrooms, three and a half bathrooms, three car garage, full basement.”

“That’s a big house for one person,” she states.

“It is, but I’m planning for my future,” I tell her. “One that involves a family, so I wanted someplace that would work.”

“So, you’ll drive into Possum Run for work?” she asks.
