“I don’t know,” I repeat. I stand, pacing, my thoughts vomiting out into the room. “I just know that I’m fucking obsessed with her, Ev. I can’t get enough. It feels like I’m frantic for her. Like there’s something else going on between us. Like she’s…”

I stop.

“She’s not your fated mate, T,” Evander whispers. “Fated mates can’t be human.”

I shut my eyes.

Recently, one of our distant cousins in Montana did something incredible. He found his fated mate, something that shifters had forgotten existed. Fated mates make you stronger. Faster. More powerful. They’re determined by something more than just the usual agreement for mates.

The news rocked the shifter world.

However, considering there hadn’t been a fated mate pair for hundreds of years prior to Gabe and Cara, it’s not likely to happen again.

I’m not hopeful.

Or at least, I didn’t think I was.

Until now.

“I know,” I whisper, my voice hoarse. “I know, Ev.”

“You have to end it. For the pack,” he murmurs.

I shut my eyes. The vision I had, of a picnic at the lake and lazy afternoon sex, disappears.

“I will,” I whisper.

It’s time.

Chapter 6

Iris

With a trembling hand, I reach for my cell phone, dialing without thinking.

My eyes are on the array of pregnancy tests in front of me.

It rings, then Jenni picks up. “Hey, Jenni.”

“Hey.”

“Can you cover me tomorrow? I… don’t feel well.”

She snorts. “Why?”

“Stomach… issues,” I say in a tone that makes it sound like a question.

“Like what? Flu?”

“No. Just. Not feeling well,” I say with all the coherence I can muster.

Jenni sighs. “Well, if it was anyone else, I’d ask if they were pregnant but… I know for a fact you don’t date. So. Feel better soon.”

“Yeah. Thanks,” I mutter.

She hanks up the phone.

Leaving me alone with my thoughts.
