“The treasure room. I have to get there before—”

A loud crash of breaking glass reaches my ears. Someone’s throwing grenades through the windows.

“You handle this,” I bark at them. “Call Masseri and go handle this. Meet me at the treasure room when it’s done.”

“But Boss…,” I hear one of them scream, and I ignore them. What they don’t understand is that our entire empire can come crumbling down if the Heart of Italy is brought together at the hands of the wrong man.

With Mario’s gun in hand, I run towards the library.

I find my way to the treasure room, unlocking the door outside. It’s only when I unlock it with the key from my pocket and fiddle with my neck that I realize the necklace with the key to the glass box inside is missing.

“Noooo,” I roar. It won't matter. I can disengage the lasers and break through the glass.

Rage swells within me as I burst into the treasure room. Franco is waiting in the vault.

He jumps to his feet. “They locked me in, Boss,” he exclaims.

They? Fiero and Romola were here?

I started to feel relieved that Franco stayed true and followed orders. He could have easily succumbed to the diamond’s allure and disappeared in the chaos. I am also thankful that my brother is alive if Fiero and Romola were really here…

My gaze falls upon the pedestal where the entire diamond should sit, but I find just one half. I feel such relief spread through me, and I begin to laugh with sheer ecstasy.

“They didn’t take it?” I ask Franco incredulously. “What happened? Did the lasers scare them off? Where’s the other half?”

Franco goes pale and shakes his head. “Th…They took one half, boss. They disengaged the lasers and took one half.”

“One half?” I slither out the words, unable to comprehend the meaning behind them. “Whatever could they do with one…”

And then, it hits me. “Fuuuck,” I bellow, running to the case where the half is left behind in mocking display.

I snatch up the remaining half, the light glinting off its facets. I clench my fist around the false diamond, the edges biting into my palm.

A fake. It's been a ruse all along. Romola never stole the original.

I roar in fury, the sound reverberating through the room. Fiero and Romola have crossed me for the last time. Now, the hunt begins.

“Follow me, Franco,” I bark at him, and we scramble to put together our team as soon as possible.

I summon a few key guys into the library. “Find me Fiero Cremaschia and the Toscani woman. They’ve taken something from me...something very precious,” I tell Gianno.

Understanding dawns in Gianni's eyes. He turns to the others, barking out orders. "You heard the Boss! Prepare the vehicles and give us a clear exit path. We're going after them."

The men rush to obey, and I stride over to the windows to see how the war is going outside. “They’ve brought in more men,” I mutter. Fiero must be outside with them.”

But then, one of my men comes back, pale in the face. “Boss,” he tells me, trembling like a messenger preparing to be shot.

“Out with it,” I spit at his feet.

“The guards used face detection to swiftly scan all the CCTV footage. Those two flew away.”

“Flew away?” my eyes narrow.

“From a helicopter, they made land on our helipad.”

“Aaaarghhh,” I scream, throwing a vase in the direction of his head. He ducks, and it shatters on the wall.

I turn to Gianno. “Prepare my two-seater aircraft. I’m following them immediately. Let me know as soon as we’re ready for take-off.”
