“You’re here early,” Egan said. “You don’t have a flight for an hour.”

“I need to talk to you,” he said. He told Egan about his mother’s call. “I don’t think it’s anything.”

“But you’re worried,” Egan said. “No reason to be. I’ll talk to my father, but better yet, Hailey will be here with the baby in ten minutes.”

His shoulders dropped. The last thing he wanted to do was bring in the family attorney, but hadn’t Egan told him already that was their shield?

“Not ideal, but I’ll leave the decision up to you,” he said. Once again in his life there wasn’t much he could do about things.

When Hailey showed up a few minutes later, Egan was just hanging up the phone after talking to his father.

“Do you have a few minutes before we take off?” Egan asked Hailey. “We need to tell you something that is going on. Just inform you.”

“Sure,” Hailey said. “J.B. is sleeping. He won’t care.”

Lincoln looked at the baby in her arms. J.B. would be a year old in another month, but he was out cold. Egan was putting the car seat in the helicopter for the baby. They had a few at both locations.

“I’ll start,” Lincoln said. He filled her in on what was going on.

“I don’t understand,” Hailey said. “You dated someone in high school. You broke up. You were a passenger in the car for the accident.”

“I told him the same thing,” Egan said.

“But it’s what happened to Lara and after the accident,” he said. He explained more.

“Grace has no idea, does she?” Hailey asked.

“No. I never saw the reason to tell her.”

“It’s in his past,” Egan argued. “What’s the big deal?”

“Nothing from a business standpoint. There are a few things we can do. We can sit tight and see if they attempt to do anything. I can make sure we are watching if they want to do anything and nip it in the bud prior.”

“Might be best,” Egan said.

“That can be done. I’ll talk to Hunter and my grandfather and Mitchell. This is a business decision. But from a woman’s point of view...you might want to man up, Lincoln. I’d be pissed if I found this out about Rex. Even if it’s out of your control, there is a human element to this. One that you’re carrying with you. I know my cousin. Trust me when I tell you, we are a lot alike in some ways.”

Which meant he better figure it out fast.

LIKE A SISSY

“Hey,” Grace said on Saturday morning. “I thought you had flights this morning.”

“I do,” he said. “But I’ve got an hour yet before I’ve got to be to the airstrip. I’m glad you could make time for me.”

She laughed at him. “Anytime.”

“Why are you laughing?”

“I don’t know. You seem off. Your comment sounded so professional. You know, make time for you, like have a meeting.”

He ran his hand through his hair. His sunglasses were in the front of his shirt like he normally kept them when they weren’t on. His body was tense though and that wasn’t like him.

“You could call it that. I know you’re going to be upset.”

“Upset?” she asked. “Is everything okay? You’re not breaking up with me, are you?”
