I narrowed my eyes again. Something had happened that had made Alex uncomfortable enough to not want to tell me.

Not good.

But what? Zotov had practically acknowledged it was in his best interest to build an alliance. Uncle Craig would’ve done everything in his power to keep the peace between the Donnelly family and the Falcones/Salvinis. So that left Vincenzo Salvini.

“Why didn’t Cristo and Salvini join us?”

“Cristo and Vince made a quick detour to pick someone up. It was Gabe’s request, actually.”

Another vague answer. This was not working.

I fidgeted in his arms. “Put me down.”

For a second, he looked like he didn’t want to, then he loosened his grip and helped me stand.

I put my hands on my hips and faced him. “This is not going to work.”

I could see the storm brewing, could sense his body stiffening. “What isn’t?”

“You not talking to me.”

He ran his hand through his hair and sighed. “Just because I love you, doesn’t mean I’m suddenly a different man.”

“Just because I love you, doesn’t mean I’m suddenly a different woman.”

He stared at me for a beat, then lifted both corners of his mouth into a smile. “We’re a match made in hell.”

I raised one eyebrow. “Not true. We just have to learn how to communicate properly. Starting with you telling me what happened in that room that’s bothering you.”

He exhaled. “Can you wait until we’re at the hospital? Then I don’t have to repeat the same story over and over.”

I cocked my head. But the clear look in his eyes told me his sincerity. He wasn’t not telling the truth. He just needed me to be a little patient. And waiting a couple more minutes wasn’t an unreasonable demand.

I nodded.

Alex led me to the black SUV that waited for us, driver included. He opened the door to the backseat, helped me inside, leaned over me to fasten my seatbelt for me, and gave me a quick peck. “You’re cute when you sleep. Even with a shiner and drooling like a Labrador.” He closed the door, rounded the car, then settled down right next to me.

“I didn’t drool.”

He gave me a sideways glance and a grin.

My heart fluttered.

Damn. Being teased by Alex Falcone was one thing. Seeing the love mixed with humor in his eyes a whole other level.

I opened my seatbelt, scooted over, and buckled myself into the middle seat. And when he raised his arm, cuddled myself against him. “You should’ve told me you were wearing a bulletproof vest.”

Alex turned his head, and his lips caressed my crown. “I thought you knew. Since you bounced your nose hard enough to be most likely broken.”

“I don’t think it’s broken,” I said and snuggled up to him even closer. “What happened with your meeting with the Moretti family?”

He shrugged his shoulder. “Nothing exciting. We parted amicably, and they will evaluate what’s best for the family.”

There was probably more to it than that, but I decided to give it a rest for today.

Because being safe in Alex’s arms, was good enough for now.
