“For one, you keep your hands off of me from now on.”

His eyes darkened, his arm around my waist tightening. The refusal in his eyes was clearly visible until he suddenly grinned and raised both his hands, then took a step back. “Okay, what’s the second condition?”

“No flirting.”

He cocked his head. “In general or only with you?”

I sighed. “With me.”

He looked like he had to think hard about that one. “I can’t promise you that. I’m naturally charming.”

I chuckled. “You’re naturally cocky. There’s a huge difference.”

“Is there?” He raised a sexy brow again, which made him look devastatingly handsome.

Massively annoying.

And very hard to ignore.

The staff members emerged, arms laden with clothes, and they led us to the back of the boutique.

Alex’s eyes gleamed as he riffled through the presented clothes, clearly relishing playing dress-up.

He selected a deep crimson gown, which I refused, a very short, black cocktail dress—which I refused, as well, and then he held up a stunning gold dress that looked like shimmering fire.

I shook my head.

His jaw hardened, and his eyes got darker as he stared me down. “Fee.”

“Alex.”

Our staring contest lasted, but I wasn’t ready to give in.

One of the sales associates got nervous, pushed a dress into my hand, and ushered me behind a screen to change. I undressed and put the dress on.

And holy shit.

My reflection was stunning. The form-fitting dress hugged my curves, and the deep emerald hue complemented my complexion.

“I need practical clothes, Alex. I don’t intend to attend a royal audience or a ball while I’m here.”

Alex chuckled. “Show me.”

The silk slithered over my body with every movement cool and sensual.

The dress fit perfectly even though it was a tad short and had a very deep hemline, which would make wearing a bra underneath impossible. Of course, this one had to be way more risky than the others I’d denied.

I stepped out and glared at him.

“Wow,” he breathed, his eyes darkening as his gaze raked over me like a physical touch. Then he caught my gaze, and a dangerous electrical current sizzled between us.

It was undeniable—there was chemistry between us, however unlikely. And the way he looked at me right now told me he would consume me whole—if I let him.

Which I had absolutely zero intention to do.

I had to maintain control.

He circled me like a predator, then took a couple steps back. “I hate it; take it off.”
