At least I hadn’t gotten anything from the buffet just yet. I dropped from my seat, down to the floor, hid behind the table, and plotted my escape. I just needed him to look the other way for a second.

But of course, instead of going in the other direction, Alex slowly made his way towards my table.

No, no, no.

He stopped, crouched down, and talked to a baby in a high chair.

This was my chance.

I crawled on all fours, bypassed another table—the couple staring at me as if I’d lost my marbles, which, come to think of it, maybe I had—then, with my eyes focused on the exit, I stood, carefully keeping my back to him.

“Hey there, princess. Trying to escape?”

I froze when his low, growly voice stopped me in my tracks. Shit. I plastered a completely fake smile on my face and slowly turned back around.

“Hey, Alex, didn’t even see you.”

The look in his eyes told me he was calling bullshit. But at least he had the decency not to call me on it. “You alone? What horrible things did you do that they abandoned you on this fine evening?”

I narrowed my eyebrows and glared at him.

Here we go again.

But I was too exhausted to stand up to him for round two. “The newlyweds are off to a romantic dinner, if you must know,” I said, then turned around and marched out of the restaurant, leaving him standing.

Please, don’t follow. Don’t follow. Don’t follow.

I made it outside of the building; took a deep breath.

“Stop.”

Shit. Of course, he’d followed me. What other than complete and utter humiliation could satisfy Mr. Cocky?

I stopped, braced myself, and turned back around.

“You haven’t eaten.”

It wasn’t a question. It was a statement, and the look in his eyes that accompanied it was nothing short of stormy.

Would he believe me if I lied to him? Well, only one way to find out. “I did. I was finished already before you came in.”

His stormy eyes turned into dangerous slits. “So, you did see me?”

Damn.

And right then, my traitorous body betrayed me, and my stomach growled loud enough that he could hear it, as well.

He stepped closer until he was toe-to-toe with me. This guy really had no concept of personal space.

“I don’t appreciate being lied to my face,” he growled low in his throat.

I swallowed, my heart pounding in my chest. “I don’t appreciate you crowding me.”

He leaned in even farther until his almost-black eyes were the only thing I could see.

“Well, principessa. If you hadn’t lied to me, and if you hadn’t run, it wouldn’t have been necessary.”

I took a step back, his presence too close, too much for me to handle. “Why? It’s none of your business.”
