He was a cocky Italian Mafia boss—the worst kind of wrong.

And yet…

We stopped right in front of the main entrance—which I hadn’t expected.

“Brace yourself.” Alex got out, handed the keys to Matt, then rounded the hood, opened the door, and helped me get out by taking my hand.

But instead of letting me go, he intertwined our hands again, and like that, we walked into the club. Accompanied by a frenzy of camera flashes.

What the fuck? Why were there paparazzi taking photos of us?

But Alex ignored them completely and pulled me forward. The bouncer stared at us as if he’d never seen Alex with a woman before.

Comforting.

We entered the club, where blaring music greeted us, and a sea of dancing people illuminated by flashing lights parted when Alex and I walked right through towards the bar in the back—the bar where I’d sat just yesterday. “Let’s have a drink, then go upstairs into my office,” Alex whisper-shouted in my ear.

I nodded. A drink would be good. And back in his office, I could finally get my stuff back.

He settled down at the bar, right in front of the barkeeper, and pulled me between his legs.

I raised an eyebrow, which he countered with a wink. “We’re dating, remember.”

I frowned, which made him chuckle. Damn entitled asshole.

“What can I get you?” the barkeeper asked and stared at me with a weird look in his eyes—which made me uncomfortable. I looked for Mario, the barkeeper from yesterday, but couldn’t find him.

Maybe it was his day off.

“Water on the rocks, and one for my woman,” Alex said, loud enough to be heard despite the music.

I snapped my eyes back at him and cocked my head. “You’re enjoying this.”

He looked like he had to think about that for a half-second, then he smiled, his teeth unnaturally white in the half-dark. “Hell, yes.” He pulled me closer, slung his arm around me, and rested his hand on the small of my back, right above my ass.

As if we were a real couple—which was both surreal and strangely comforting.

I looked across the club to the dance-floor—everywhere but at him—and waved when Cherry and Floyd appeared from that direction.

“Hey, you two,” Cherry said, and without blinking an eye at my position in Alex’s arms, gave me a hug and an air kiss, while Floyd fist-bumped Alex. “How’re you lovebirds doing today?”

I narrowed my eyes and stared at Alex before turning in his arms and facing Cherry and Floyd.

Now, his hand was splayed over my stomach. He pulled me back to him until my back hit his chest, and I could feel his body heat through my tank top.

“All good,” Alex said, and I could feel the rumble of his voice reverberating from his chest.

Holy smokes.

It was like I was surrounded by his heat, his body, and his scent—which was, admittedly, not a bad place to be. It felt safe and cosy, and a part of me really liked to be claimed as his.

Wait. No. Stop.

This was fake.

This was not real.

And no part of me was allowed to like this.
