She opened the door wider, and behind her, Sophie and Fee stood huddled together.

My chest tightened, and immediately, pictures of her on top of me occupied my mind.

And then…her reaction to the no-condom situation.

I tensed, anger simmering in my gut. For a split second, I had imagined Fee, pregnant with my baby.

For a split second, every single nerve ending in my body rejoiced at the possibility.

Until she doused it all with her “Thank God.” As if she couldn’t imagine anything worse than being pregnant with my baby.

Fuck.

I had no business even thinking about procreating. This was not a game. This was my life, and the safety of my family in danger.

Gabe sighed. “Come in.” He hovered beside me, a silent show of support.

My mother wrung her hands, tears glistening on her lashes. “I’m so glad you’re all okay. Alessandro, I know this is all a big mess. I’ve made mistakes, but you have to understand?—”

“Understand what?” I snapped. After a lifetime of lies, she had no right to ask anything of me. And I sure as shit didn’t need to understand anything. “What do I have to understand, Mother? That you lied to me my whole life? Kept the truth from me, made me believe I was someone I’m not?”

The bitterness rose like bile in my throat. “Is that what I have to understand? Because trust me”—I let out a cynical laugh—“I understand it all…intimately.”

Fee touched my arm, her eyes pleading. “Alex, please. Your mother was in an impossible position.”

I stared at her, then at Sophie, who shrugged and looked down at her feet.

What the hell had they told Fee? Did she know?

Did she know the fucked-up situation my life was in?

“Your father and Moretti senior were the ones who insisted on keeping the secret. You can’t blame your mother for that,” Fee said.

I jerked away from her touch and jumped up, anger searing my skin.

Did she think I needed her to fight my battles? To tell me how I should and shouldn’t feel?

“This doesn’t concern you,” I bit out. “No one asked for your opinion.”

Fee’s eyes flashed with hurt and anger. “I was trying to help. There’s no need for you to talk to me in that tone.”

“Help?” I scoffed. She was way over the line.

But help? Help, my ass.

I grabbed her arm, then dragged her to the other side of the room, hopefully out of earshot of the others. “The only thing you helped me with was empty my balls,” I said.

Fee flinched back as if I’d hit her.

I ignored my mother’s inhale and Gabe’s groan.

Ignored the immediate regret following my words, as well.

“I don’t need your opinions on my life or how I should or shouldn’t handle my relationship with my mother.”

“You’re way out of line,” Fee said sharply, glaring at me. “The way you spoke to her was cruel and unjustified.”

“Stay the fuck out of it,” I growled, then took a menacing step toward her, blood pounding in my ears. “We fucked. Nothing more, nothing less. But fucking doesn’t mean shit,” the words poured out of me like venom. As if someone else had taken over. Someone who was breathing fire.
