"We said we would give him space, but it has only been a few hours. If you need to do something, call Olsen and get an update, but we must wait this out a little longer." He knew Colby was right, but it didn't make it any easier.

“I smelled that too.” Rex stated and Colby stood and walked over to where he was standing by the window. “Do you detect the scent anywhere near Dorian’s workplace?”

“It was definitely wolf and they were using a suppressant to try and cloud their scent. I don’t smell it at his office building.” Olsen gave him a rundown of his findings so far. “Don’t worry, I will keep him safe.”

"Thanks, man." Rex closed the call.

"It was a wolf then," Colby asked for clarification, and Rex nodded. "We need to find out who would be loitering around Dorian's property at night."

"He's at work. How about we head over to his place and take another look around." Rex suggested.

“Good idea.” They headed out immediately but came to a stop in the hallway when Rex’s phone rang.

"It's Olsen." He announced and opened the call, putting it on speaker. "Hello."

“There’s been an incident and I think you two should probably get down here.” That’s all he had to say to have the two of them racing to the elevator.

"What is it that happened?" Rex demanded.

“Your adored nearly took a fatal fall.” They looked at each other and their hearts fell to the floor. Fear like nothing ever before engulfed them. “I’ll tell you the rest when you get here, hurry.” He closed the call as they jumped into one of the cars. Colby was driving and they tore out of the underground garage like the devil himself was after them.

CHAPTER SEVEN

After his call with Paul, Dorian felt more relaxed; there was something about the fact that the vampire truth was out in the open, and they could talk freely, which seemed to make it all seem okay. He was still a little disconcerted about the insinuations he made regarding Rex and Colby.

Paul knew something he wasn't telling him about Rex and Colby, and all the evidence pointed to something serious between him and the brothers. Ever since he'd gotten up that morning, he'd felt different. His mind was clearer, and he could see and understand things that he couldn’t yesterday. It was as if a door had started to open into another world, the vampire world.

He should have stayed with Rex and Colby running was so unfair to them and so childish. He would finish what he was working on and then he’d give them a call. He had Rex’s phone number the man had slipped it into his phone last night. The thought of Rex brought back that smile filled with warmth and teasing so in contrast to hard man he saw him as when they first met. Rex could be playful whereas Colby was all business.

Colby appeared cold and serious but also attentive and thoughtful, never missing the moments that Dorian needed support and being there. They seemed to know him upon first glance, and if he were being honest with himself, Dorian knew them too. He panicked and he hurt them. He could sense their pain and knew they were upset, but he still pushed them away and made them leave. It was his biggest regret so far.

"Opal, please clear my schedule for today and tomorrow." He instructed his assistant and then shut down his office for the day. He was heading home, and he was going to call them and make this right. They were important, and he would not let his fears and distrust ruin everything for him.

He noticed Opal smiling at him as he left. “Have a good day Mr. Haskel.” He said with a knowing lilt in her tone.

“I plan on it.” Dorian responded and instead of taking the elevator he opted for the stairs they were quicker, and he didn’t want to waste any more time. He pulled out his phone ready to send a quick text message to Rex when suddenly out of nowhere someone came barreling into his side knocking him to the right with such force he flipped over the railing and was hanging there barely holding on. His phone slipped from his grasp and went crashing several floors down.

Then, just as suddenly, he was back on his feet on the stairs, and several men were rushing around and bringing him to the lobby. "What happened?" He tried to ask but no one responded to him. "Who was that?" He asked when he was made to sit on one of the lobby benches.

“We don’t know.” A tall, dark man in a black suit knelt down in front of him and spoke. “Did you see who it was that ran into you?”

Dorian shook his head no. "It was so fast, and I'm embarrassed to say that I was concentrating on my phone at the time. I didn't even hear them approach. Are you part of security?"

“Yes, I’m part of security.” He said to him, but his focus was on everything in the area. He was looking for something.

Dorian looked around the lobby and there were people there that he recognized and people he didn’t. Opal ran up to him clearly upset.

"Do you wish for me to call the police?" She asked, and the man who was kneeling in front of him stood up, stepped back, and started talking to two other men, effectively leaving him in Opal's hands

“No, it wasn’t purposeful I believe it was an accident. I’m fine no need to make this bigger than it is.” He assured although he wasn’t as certain as he let on.

“One of the security men gave me this.” Opal handed him his cell phone. “They found it at the bottom of the stairwell. That could have been you.” She emphasized the last word.

“But it wasn’t and I’m fine.” Dorian again refused to accept that someone deliberately tried to hurt him. He surveyed his phone, and it was a total loss, the screen was smashed and the right bottom corner was crushed. That must have been the point of impact he surmised. He removed the sim card and tossed the phone in the trash.

“Do you want me to drive you to the hospital just so they can look you over and make sure you’re as fine as you think you are?” Opal was pushing too hard and getting on Dorian’s nerves, so he simply shot her a look that said to back off.

“Okay, okay.” She relented and stepped away to talk to the front desk receptionist. Dorian buried his face in his hands and took a few deep breaths in an attempt to steady himself and unexpectedly the air around him changed and he looked up to see Rex and Colby rushing toward him. He jumped to his feet as relief flooded his heart and mind and he finally began to relax.
