He couldn’t believe his eyes or his nose the moment he stepped into that lobby and smelled the sweet scent of moonflower on a cool night breeze. It fixated his attention and made the young human standing by the doors the most important person in the room and perhaps the world. One glance at his brother told him that Rex was having a similar experience.

It was pure torture walking in and knowing the man belonged to him, to them, and not able to do anything about it except stand there and observe. Suggesting dinner was not his place but Colby had to do something to pull the young man into their sphere. “God, wasn’t he gorgeous?” Colby commented as they made their way to Sloan’s office.

"That blonde hair was like spun gold, and his eyes were so blue I've never seen eyes so blue they made him look oddly angelic." Rex recounted the handsomeness of their adored.

"He's going to be a handful. He's smart and suspicious, not sure, but he seemed to look at us as if he could really see us." Colby said and then added. "He knows more than we think he knows."

“What do you mean? You think he knows we have a connection with him?” Rex sounded hopeful.

“No, I think he may know we’re vampires.”

CHAPTER THREE

Dorian canceled all his appointments for the rest of the day and spent his time researching Agincourt and the two guards. There was something about those two men that really got his back up. Apart from being heart-stopping gorgeous, they held an authority and an influence that put their power and importance beyond that of mere bodyguards.

Paul treated them casually, but they watched him with a fierce concentration nothing would have gone unnoticed. Dorian wondered if they picked up on his awareness of who they really were. Dorian was able to work with and move among these people because he never drew attention to his suspicions and never until today voiced any of his thoughts regarding the mysticism present in Charlotte. His worry over Paul’s relationship with one of them pushed him to say more than he should have.

"I've scoured the internet, and all I can find on Sloan Dobre is from the past few years. It is simply public occasions such as award ceremonies and business dinners. There is nothing personal that is accessible apart from a few stats." His assistant Opal reported and laid a thin folder on his desk. "I sent you the information on Agincourt, but these hard copies are from many years ago, and I found them intriguing."

“In what way?” Dorian walked over and picked up the folder.

"They're photographs." Dorian looked at the first one, which was a party scene from the forties or fifties. Some of those that were present were strangely familiar.

"It could be familial." Opal offered. "This town is damn strange." She finished and left the office. Dorian had to agree with her on that score. He took his tablet and the file and sat down to review. The photos were interesting but could be easily explained away. Besides, who was going to believe anyone was immortal? Just thinking it made Dorian cringe with the backlash that would be felt. It didn't stop him from studying the shots and the people in them.

His mind kept reverting to the two guards that had accompanied Paul. They were serious protection but also gave off a sense of patience and tolerance which was very unusual for Agincourt muscle. The one named Colby was coming to collect him later for dinner, which was also unusual. Dorian had visited Agincourt headquarters before, and he drove himself and was directed once he arrived as to where to go.

He should probably be concerned that the guard was picking him up and would also most likely be his ride back. The guard, although reserved and cold did not bother him. He was not a threat but that didn’t mean he wouldn’t do what he was ordered to do.

There was something familiar about those men not that he’d met them before because he hadn’t. Their black hair and black eyes were mesmerizing. He would have remembered them. There was something about them that stirred memories and an association. The more he tried to figure it out the further from his understanding it became so Dorian set the feelings aside for future analysis and concentrated on the information in front of him.

The two guards were Rex and Colby St. John, and according to the research, they have been working for Elan Kilconnor and Agincourt for as long as the company has existed. However, it also had the brothers as personal guards prior to the organization of Agincourt, which would make them much older than they appeared to be in their early thirties.

The information was patchy and unverified in most of what was provided, so it was interesting but did not prove a damn thing. Everyone associated with Agincourt possessed a level of strangeness, but again, nothing concrete, so nothing that Paul would believe or react to. Dorian began to wonder if perhaps he was the one with the problem and was developing an obsession where Agincourt and Kilconnor’s people were concerned.

There was no doubt in his mind that there were vampires afoot in Charlotte and that Kilconnor was one of them. He also knew that most, if not all, who worked for Kilconnor were vampires. That was not information he could just readily hand over to Paul without the man thinking he was insane. This was going to be an evening to remember, if not to regret.

“Come in take a seat.” Sloan instructed the brothers, and they sat together on the sofa against the wall and Sloan took the chair directly in front of them. “Tell me how it went and whether or not we’re going to have to deal with this guy.”

Rex and Colby looked pointedly at each other, and then Colby began. "He's coming to dinner tonight, but Paul probably already made you aware of that." Sloan nodded. "He knows who we are." He went right to the heart of the matter. Sloan was surprised and sat up a little straighter in his seat.

"He is aware of the paranormal presence in Charlotte, and we're almost certain based on his behavior," Rex added. "He is afraid for his friend but also knows that his belief would probably not be accepted. He isn't aware that Paul knows and appears to know nothing of the bond that exists between you."

“This is troubling.” Sloan rubbed his chin. “I hate to screw with the mind of Paul’s best friend.”

"That isn't going to be possible," Colby interjected.

“Why not?” Sloan leaned forward in his chair and waited for an explanation while Rex and Colby took a quick glance at one another.

"He's our adored." They said in unison, and Sloan reared back in surprise.

“Well, I didn’t see that coming.” He said with a somewhat grim smile.

"We're picking him up for dinner tonight," Colby added.

"Naturally, you're both invited." Sloan chuckled and once again leaned forward in his chair. "May I share the information with Paul?"

"Yes, of course," Colby stated.
