He let Tony fall to keep himself safe.

And, apparently, because he thought Paulie would be the easier man to train.

“I know you don’t see my vision. Too fuckin’ weak, always were. Told your mother that from the start, that she needed to stop fuckin’ babying you. But here we are. So I let you and Paulie duke it out, show me who was worthy. Had it all set until this fuckin’ cunt came around.”

He looks back at me and shakes his head.

“Would have been great, bringing you into the family, getting that tie. But you’re fuckin’ trouble like that mother of yours. Like that father of yours. Too much trouble. When I found out you were working with Dante, told him he could get rid of you and end the family line or give you to Paulie. Knew you weren’t working there without some kind of plan, but I thought you could benefit us. He chose well at the time. But you’re just a fuckin’ rat. A stupid cunt who needs to go.” Carmine turns away from his son and steps toward me again.

For a man in his seventies, he’s still broad and in shape and could very well cause me the hurt he’s threatening.

He could kill me.

“That’s where you went wrong,” Dante says, stepping between his father and me, voice losing the polite, respectful nature.

A shield.

My knight, serving his queen.

“Wrong?”

“So fuckin’ wrong, Carmine,” Dante says. Carmine rolls his eyes at his son, a move I see when I peek over Dante’s broad shoulders.

“What the fuck are you talking about, Dante? Always with the damn riddles. Be a normal fuckin’ man and talk straight.” He smiles a sick, evil look that sends a chill down my spine and I take a step back. “That’s your mother in you. Weak.”

“You should stop now,” Dante says, his voice low and menacing, but now I’m seeing it.

Even if Dante doesn’t recognize it, I can. There’s something in Carmine’s words, a secret he’s finally willing to reveal.

One that is going to destroy Dante.

I put my hand to his back, trying to tell him we need to go before it happens.

In the same way he wants to protect me, I need to protect him.

But the old man’s smile grows, and I can now see fully what a sick fuck he is.

He lets it all out in front of basically a stranger, assuming I’ll be gone in a day or so, no loose lips to sink his ship.

A ship that, from what I understand, once loved Eliza Carluccio with a fierceness. And now history is repeating itself as the men of the family are beginning to love another new member the same way.

Me.

“That’s why she was killed, you know. Not strong enough for the life. Couldn’t take it.”

Dante waits for a beat before speaking, his words slow and losing their angry edge.

Tinged in confusion.

“She was killed because she knew too much.”

Then Carmine drops a bombshell he’s been holding close for some time, I assume.

And he does it with malice in his eyes.

“She was killed because I told her to be outside that deli at noon.”

The room turns to ice, and Dante’s body stills. The sick grin on his father’s face starts to spread.
