It’s so totally fucked, but I get a little hot watching him.

My heart races and my pussy flutters at this man protecting my honor.

“You gonna fuckin’ play nice? You gonna respect your Donna?” The man’s eyes go wide and I smile.

Might as well lean into the position, after all.

And then he nods.

Dante puts him down.

“I will not tolerate a single one of you talking down to my wife. I draw the line there. I vow to be a fair and just Don, to value the family above all else. To bring us into the future, to build better. But I will do that with Lilah at my side. She will not just be my wife—we are a team.”

“You’re merging the families,” Jason says, his voice low and not quite shocked, but still nearly.

“We’ll be running the families together. If it works to merge, if it benefits all of us equally, yes. But until then, Dante and I will be running the Carluccio family while Alfredo teaches me more about the family I was born into.”

I get stares but also, a few nods.

Finally, Jason stands.

“I vote for Dante and Delilah. Both of them. I think they can take the family in the direction it needs to go,” he says, shocking me to my core.

“I second that,” Marco says, standing, his voice booming.

“Third,” Tino says with a smile.

And then slowly, I watch every man in the room vote in favor of Dante.

And me.

And hours later, after a very old-school ceremony and a few drinks, I walk out the Donna of the Carluccio crime family.

“I’m gonna fuckin—” Paulie starts, but before he can say more, four men walk in, Marco at the front.

“It’s time for the service,” he says, and Dante nods, leading me and Teresa out of the room, Paulie left to try and put together his new reality.

“Should we be worried?” I ask under my breath as we walk toward the room where the ceremony will be.

“I have Jason and Tino on him, keeping an eye.”

“You don’t think he’ll do anything crazy, right?” It’s probably bad luck even putting that out into the universe.

“He’s drunk and he’s Paulie and you’re in the same building as him. I won’t take a single chance.”

My hand holding his squeezes and he looks down and smiles at me as we enter the living room.

And we enter as the heads of this family.

FORTY-TWO

-Lilah-

“We’re here today to honor Carmine Carluccio, a man of honor and integrity,” Dante says not long after, his words ringing in the large room that once held my engagement party.

I force myself not to scoff before feeling an elbow in my side—Teresa. Her own lips are pursed, as she’s trying to fight a smile.
