“He wasn’t supposed to, so glad to know he did his fuckin’ job.” I cross my arms on my chest.

“We said no more secrets, Dante.”

“No more secrets about the family. But this? This would do you no good. Nothing you could do about it, and all it would be was a stressor, something for you to worry about, and Lilah, you’ve worried enough about this goddamn man for a fuckin’ lifetime.” He reduces the gap between us, putting a hand on each side of my face.

“Made it my mission for you to live easy, Delilah. That includes keeping shit from you sometimes.” I make a face, but he keeps talking. “If there is something that you cannot act upon, something that will cause you stress, I will not be telling you. I will not apologize for that. You are my wife, and I live to keep you happy and safe. If it’s not about the family, not about business, I’m not telling you.” I grind my teeth before speaking again.

“What about Lola—”

“Talked to Ben, and he agreed.” My mouth drops open.

“What?”

“Called Ben up nine months ago when Turner started to get in deep. Wanted his opinion. His wife’s father was in some shit, and I know he feels the same I do about that man. He agreed that until it impacted you two, we wouldn’t burden you with it.”

“You called up my brother-in-law?” I scrunch my nose, feeling tears there.

Betrayal, maybe.

“He’s my brother-in-law too, technically.” I roll my eyes. “But yes. I needed to pull him in, get his opinion.” Dante moves then, dipping and lifting me, walking me to the couch in the living room and sitting, making me straddle his lap. “Now, tell me what the cops said.”

“Nothing much. Apparently, he left New Hampshire and had a warrant there. He got stopped in Hudson City with an expired registration, and they arrested him.”

“Why was he in Hudson City?” Dante asks, and I sigh.

This he will not like.

“Apparently, he was on his way to Jerzy Girls,” I say, my voice low. “He wanted to talk with you.”

“With me?” Dante says, his voice shocked. “Why the fuck would he want to talk with me?” I give him a look that tells him exactly why he would want to talk to the Don of the Carluccio-Russo family.

“Fine, why the fuck would he think I wanted to talk with him.”

“No idea. They couldn’t give me an answer. Eventually, I got tired of being there, asked if they had a warrant for me, and left when they said no.”

“Good fucking girl,” he says, a smirk on his face.

“Dante—”

“I’ll figure out whatever else I need to know tonight when I have Marco look into it. Gut tells me that Turner is officially not our problem and that he’ll be a guest of the state sometime soon.”

He presses his lips to mine.

“Now that that’s handled,” Dante says, moving so I’m lying on my back and he’s hovering over me.

“It’s not handled, Dante!”

“It is, baby. He’s in custody; he’s done. I’ll have Teresa do her magic later, send over whatever she has in her fucking psychotic file.”

“You’re gonna—”

“I’m not gonna do shit, Lilah. He did it. But I will be making sure we can be done with him once and for all.” My stomach drops despite the fact that I haven’t seen or heard from the man in over five years. That time had the lowest stress of my whole life, despite literally revamping an entire crime family.

“Prison.”

“Unless you have other ideas…”

“He’s Lola’s father, Dante,” I say, my voice quiet. His hand moves, brushing my hair back.
