“Watch it!” he snaps at DJ, making him laugh. As soon as we walk back in the room we hear,

“It’s about damn time. Now that y’all have figured that out can we please get down to business?” Atlas asks. That’s my Uncle Atty, I think.

We sit around for the next hour or so making a preliminary schedule, and I am grateful the women aren’t here, but I know they already know what’s going on not only because they don’t keep secrets from each other but mainly because, quiet as it’s kept, the men are huge gossips. When my phone chirps and I see the two-word text from Brooklyn, I know I am right. It simply says, lunch tomorrow! I don’t need the time or location I already know when and where to go. I reply with a simple, ok. Ugh, I am not prepared for the Spanish Inquisition I know is coming tomorrow.

CHAPTER 17

Skai

“Bitch! Be so for real right now! I don’t know if I need to be hurt or happy for you?” Brook says as soon as I sit down at the table. All the wives are there, including True who was there yesterday so she already knew what was going on.

“I’m sorry, Brook,”

“It all makes sense now, what you said at Lennox’s party and all the other stuff.”

“You don’t know how bad I wanted to tell you. How many times I could have used your advice,”

“Why didn’t you?” she asks, and I can hear the genuine hurt in her voice.

“Because you would have told Aryan, and he would have told his brothers, and then my momma would’ve been on my ass.”

“How did she take it?” Parker asks.

“She was not the least bit surprised. She was hurt that I kept it a secret from her. But she’s okay now,”

“Well, I am surprised and, nosey so let’s hear it, and I want all the details!” Megan says.

“I have no idea how your ass could be surprised, Ms. I’ve been married for years and kept it a secret,” True says.

“That’s rich coming from the woman who kept her daddy, and the shit her and her man was up to a secret,”

“Hmm, touche,” True says with a shrug. I will soon be a sister too, not just a friend to them, so much is going to change but remain the same at the same time.

“Wait! Is that an engagement ring?” Brooklyn butts in, and I blush so hard it was answer enough. “Oh, naw, we need answers, and we need them now. How did y’all get engaged without us? We didn’t get a chance to give you a party or nothing! This is bullshit.”

“Brooklyn,” I try but she is genuinely hurt, and I know I have to make this up to her. I tell them a brief rundown of what went down between Jabarri and me.

“So wait, Natalie is a lesbian?”

“Yes,”

“So Jabarri was basically her beard?”

“Yep, apparently, her parents are weird and controlling as hell, and Jabarri was the only way she could get any real freedom.”

“I mean, that’s obvious. What parent buys houses for their children right next door?”

“Right, most parents be ready to get rid of their kids,” Joyce says.

“Naw that was your weird ass momma,” True says. “But regular parents understand that their kids will eventually start living their own lives and eventually accept it.”

“Well, she’s come out to her parents and is currently living with her girlfriend. Her brother left the country,” I say.

“Damn, you know it’s serious when you feel like you have to leave an entire country to get away from your parents,” Megan says and we all agree.

“Well all I want to know is how was it being with a man for you?” Carla asks.

“It was definitely different but Jabarri took his time with me, so I felt safe and loved. Being in Hawaii behind a waterfall helped with the ambiance, too.”
