Together, we walk to the window, but what we find is not some creature tapping on the glass but a vine. They have never done anything like this before. I have seen them move and grow but never tapping.

“What is it doing?” she asks, moving closer to get a better look. “Is it…?” She moves her hand across the glass, and it follows her. She then moves her hand up and down, and it does it again. The vines are following her.

I take a turn, but it does not affect the strange, cursed plant. I peek at the ground, and to my horror, the clearing is now filled with vines reaching for our window.

“Have they ever acted like this before toward you?”

“No! Never.”

“What’s different?” I ask myself, but she still shakes her head, unable to look away from the window.

“Nothing.”

“This is significant. I don’t know why… If I can find out, then maybe it’s a way to finally break this fucking curse. And then I can finally search for my sister.”

“Your sister?” Nyx’s head turns so fast that her hair nearly slaps her face. I didn’t mean to disclose so much so soon, but I have been dying to tell her anyway.

“Yes. My older sister disappeared at the same time the vines started growing. I believe she got trapped on the other side. My parents act as if she never existed. That is why I have so many books and am in my office whenever possible.”

“It’s Magik, isn’t it?”

I grab her hand and pull her back to the bed. If we have this long talk, we can at least be comfortable doing it. She climbs in, and I follow her, pulling her to my side.

“Yes. It has to be.”

“Do you know who could be the caster? There haven’t been Magik users since…”

“Since the old King. He was the last recorded one born with the ability. And since he had no children, the gift was never passed down.”

“No chil… There is no record of any children?” She leans forward and looks at me with surprise written all over her face.

“No. I have gone through all the documents. There is never any mention of any children. Not even a single bastard.”

“Hmm.” She chews on her bottom lip. There is something she isn’t telling me.

“What is it?”

“I…it’s just…I…”

“Nyx.” I grab her chin and force her to look at me. She needs to see that what I am about to say is genuine and cannot be misconstrued. “You can tell me anything. It will never go any further than the two of us.” Her eyes search mine, but I can see the walls still built high within her. Sooner or later, she will know that I mean it.

“Felix!” Tia’s voice rings out through the tower before the door is thrown open. “Your father is looking for you. The vines…”

“I know. I saw.” I kiss Nyx on the top of her head and get out of bed. This is going to be a long night. If Father is concerned, then the council has been called. “Nyx, stay in bed and get some rest. Father has called a meeting, and I must attend.”

“Of course. We will finish our talk when you get back.”

“Come, Tia. You know how much the King loves waiting.”

“Tia!” Nyx motions for my second in command. Tia rushes to her side, and Nyx whispers something in her ear. Whatever it is, Tia is extremely excited and smiles from ear to ear.

I shake my head and start down the stairs. It doesn’t take long for Tia to catch up.

“Are you going to tell me what that was about?” I ask with a raised brow.

“Absolutely not!” She laughs. “If she wants you to know, she will tell you.”

“I told her about Rose,” I confess as we step into the corridor and turn toward the conference room.
