A shake of his head is his response. He doesn’t talk very much unless he has to. ‘Minimum effort’ is his motto.

“Lucifer, what about you? You watched her for those seventy-two hours. Did you feel any holy presence?”

“No.” Lucifer prides himself on knowing everything that is happening around him, yet he is clearly befuddled at this predicament. “I felt my fellow angels, though none were focused on her. And Adon was definitely not on Earth. His presence can be felt across the realm.”

Gluttony portals into the throne room, face filled with satisfaction. “Hello, brothers.” He swaggers to his throne, shifting to his demon form as he walks. Taking a seat, he looks at all of us. His eyes pass over Levi, his smirk turning into a smile. “Let me guess… Satan?”

“Why would you assume it was me? Maybe he pissed off the wrong demon.”

“You’re the wrong demon,” Beel emphasizes. I shrug. He’s correct. Our eyes meet, and Gluttony mouths the words ‘thank you.’

“And how was it?” Asmodeus brings Beel’s attention to him. “I want every filthy detail. Please!” he begs.

“Why are you back? Why didn’t you stay?” Lucifer’s tone brings us all back to reality. His eyes are focused on his tablet that holds our Sin System. It’s got the four lists that determine where a soul goes after death. I definitely do not miss the days of enchanted paper.

“She was going to sleep. She asked for space. Today was an emotional day for her.”

“Wait,” I interrupt Gluttony. “You fucked and bound her to you, and she asked to be alone? You didn’t fuck her right then.”

“You’re sure she’s alone?” Lucifer tries to cut in.

“Yes, she’s alone.” Beelzebub answers without looking at Pride. “And you’re right. I barely fucked her at all.” His face turns cocky as he says, “I ate. I ate until she begged me to stop, then I fucked her, then I licked her clean until she was pushing my head away.” Smug bastard.

“Where’s Mammon?” Lucifer’s voice is starting to grate on my nerves.

I search for Mammon’s energy. “He’s in his room. What is your problem?”

Lucifer waits until all of us are focused on him, ever the dramatic angel. “She’s been absolved.”

15. Lucifer

I portal myself into Brianna’s apartment, searching for any sign of my fellow angels’ auras. There's nothing. Not even a blip of residual anything. It’s not possible!

Following the essence of Bree, I look into her son’s room, finding her cradling him in his small bed. They can't be comfortable. I move towards her, disentangling them and lifting Brianna into my arms.

The son wakes with my movement. His eyes blink open and focus on me. He doesn't seem scared, only confused. I'm frozen in place as we stare at each other. His eyes aren't normal. They're the same green as his mother, but there’s a gold ring around them… Not very different from my own purple and gold eyes. Mine were completely gold before I fell, becoming just the gold ring to show my angel status while my irises turned purple to represent my sin.

I search his essence for any sign of anything that's not human but there's nothing. His essence and aura are what you'd expect of a young human child.

“What are you doing with Mommy?”

“I’m bringing her to her bed. She’s too big for yours.”

“Okay.” He grabs a stuffed superhero off his bed and leads the way to Brianna’s room. Climbing into the bed, he pulls the covers back so that I can place down Bree. I tuck her in, watching as the boy gets himself settled in. Even in her sleep, she wraps him in her arms. I turn away, intending to leave the apartment to search for anything holy, when his small voice rings out. “My name is Rellick.”

I turn back, curious about him. He seems smart. Maybe he knows more than I gave him credit for. “My name is Luc.”

“I like your wings! Is Santa your brother? He has wings, too! His are red. Bubby has wings when he's scary. I want wings. Can you fly? I-”

Wow, this kid can talk. I cut him off with a stern “Rellick.” He immediately stops talking and waits. “Didn't your mother ever tell you not to talk to strangers?”

“I'm not a stranger. I'm Rellick Rafe Theriot.” His smile widens to show his baby teeth. It's infectious.

“I’m a stranger.” I point to myself, emphasizing my statement.

“No, silly. You're Luc!” Rellick speaks slowly and loudly, as though I'm deaf or slow and don't know my own name.

“You didn't know that a minute ago. You didn't know me. I could have been here to take your mother. Would you have let me? You would never see her again.” I understand that he’s young, but has she never said anything about strangers?
