She waggled her eyebrows suggestively and I couldn’t help but roll my eyes in embarrassment.

I hesitated, the images of last night flashing through my mind—the rough fucking, the filthy dirty talk, and the unexpected warmth of his jacket as he slipped it over my shoulders to walk me home, not to mention how protective he became when he saw where I lived.

“It wasn’t just business,” I admitted, fidgeting with my coffee cup. “He’s… different than I expected.”

“Different how? Like, Christian Grey different?” Zara grinned so widely that I thought her cheeks might split in two.

I rolled my eyes, even as my blush deepened. “Maybe just a tiny bit… We just… connected in a way I didn’t anticipate. And he was surprisingly protective.”

“Connected, you say… Do tell,” Zara urged, leaning in closer.

I sighed, feeling a mix of shame and excitement as I finally began to recount the evening. I started from the very beginning with the charged meeting in his office and ended with the walk through my neighborhood and the guard he’d insisted on posting outside my apartment.

I decided to leave out a few details though, especially the stinging slaps to my ass, the threats of his belt, and the way I was dressed as he led me out of his office. I blushed the whole time.

A girl could keep her secrets, right?

Plus, I didn’t know if this was anything more than a one-night stand. I didn’t want to get my hopes up for something more when I wasn’t even certain there was any more to begin with. There most likely wasn’t. I was just probably getting ahead of myself like a teenage girl with her very first crush.

I needed to get a hold of myself.

“So, he basically played the knight in shining armor for you with a healthy dose of Mr. Grey? When are you boning next?” Zara teased, her eyes twinkling with amusement.

I laughed, shaking my head. “It’s not like that, Zara. We have a professional relationship to maintain.”

“Sure, sure,” she said, not looking convinced. “But you already toed that line and leapt clean over it right onto that cock…”

I playfully swatted her arm. “Zara!”

She laughed, raising her hands in mock surrender. “Okay, okay, I’ll back off. For now… But you have to tell me, how big was his dick?”

“Oh my god, you’re awful,” I said, hiding my face in my hands.

“A girl needs to know,” she pressed, and I sighed.

“He was huge,” I finally admitted, and she whooped so loudly that nearly every head in the café turned to look at her, which only made her grin wider.

“That’s my girl,” she winked.

I adjusted my outfit for what felt like the thousandth time. The dress I was wearing was a pretty royal blue number, but it felt too tight and too short. Zara had insisted I keep up the sexy secretary look, and I was too caught up in my own head to argue with her, so I just took it from her when she’d handed it over because I secretly wanted to look good for him just in case there was a chance for something more between us.

I was hopeless.

I could tell. I’d already caught feelings.

This was bad.

I took a deep breath and lifted my chin, telling myself that yesterday was nothing more than a fluke. Sure, the chemistry between us had been off the charts, but what if it was only a one-time thing?

Maybe it should be.

The more I thought about it, the more I realized that mixing business and pleasure was a dangerous game, and I really couldn’t afford to let it happen.

With a deep breath, I decided that I would pretend that yesterday hadn’t happened, that our encounter was a mere blip in the otherwise straightforward path of our working relationship, and that today was going to be business as usual.

Yet, even as I made these resolutions, a part of me knew it wouldn’t be easy. The memory of his touch, his gaze, the way he made me feel seen—it all lingered in the back of my mind.
