CHAPTER 13

Morgan

Fuck keeping it professional.

The longer I was near him, the more I hated this personal vow to myself, and the more my body burned for his touch. I was acutely aware of every aspect of his presence, from the way he occasionally leaned in closer to discuss a point, sending a ripple of desire through me, to the way he said my name like he was savoring the most luscious dessert he’d ever tasted.

It was absolutely maddening.

Glancing at my phone, I made a mental note of the time. I knew I needed to leave soon. Yet, a part of me still hesitated. In a small act of rebellion against my own better judgment, I subtly pushed my phone to the edge of the desk, and I left it there just like I’d done yesterday.

I wasn’t certain if I would leave it behind again, but I wanted the option in case I decided to come back for it later. His gaze connected with mine, purposeful and curious, before it flicked back to the phone. He said nothing, but he didn’t need to.

We both knew what I was doing.

As the workday went on, I was touched by how Hunter seemed genuinely interested in getting to know me. When the Chinese food arrived, he insisted on paying, saying it was the least he could do since we were using his office. I nibbled at the food, trying to hide how hungry I was.

Since grappling with my student loans and the cost of running a business, there wasn’t much left for my own salary, and as a byproduct, food.

When I finally put it down, it was only half empty and my stomach growled. He narrowed his eyes and pushed it back in my direction.

“Eat. Don’t be shy in front of me,” he said, the inflection in his tone deadly serious.

“Yes, si—” I answered, catching myself before I finished. My cheeks blushed red hot, and I turned my head, hoping to hide it.

I found myself playing with the hem of my sleeve, a nervous habit I had when I was embarrassed, unsure, or nervous. If he noticed, he didn’t say anything, which I was grateful for.

His attentiveness made me feel valued and seen. It was both flattering and disconcerting, and I couldn’t help but wonder where this mutual curiosity and undeniable attraction would lead us.

I knew where I wanted it to lead.

With your panties down around your ankles and your dress bunched up around your waist…

Oh my god, what was wrong with me?

My face flushed bright red. Hunter’s gaze met mine, and I glanced down immediately, trying to hide my embarrassment over the direction of my thoughts.

I glanced at the clock on the wall and started, realizing it was almost eight at night.

“I guess that’s it for today,” I said, glancing at my phone for a second.

I didn’t want to keep it professional. Not really. Not when every fiber of my being was drawn to Hunter in a way that I couldn’t rationalize or ignore. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that at the end of the day, I wanted him, and the struggle to fight that desire was quickly becoming more and more impossible.

For so long, I had prided myself on my professionalism, my ability to separate personal feelings from business, but with Hunter, those lines were blurring, and part of me wondered if they were ever really clear to begin with.

With a deep breath, I decided to just give in, to see where this unexpected and intense connection might lead. It was a risk, but something about Hunter made me want to throw caution to the wind.

I didn’t pick up my phone. I left it right where it was.

“Yeah, good work today,” he responded, not saying anything about it either.

We both stood up and walked to the office door. My mind whirled with possibilities. I didn’t know what he was going to do, what he wanted, but I had my guesses.

I would bet he wanted this too.

“Goodnight, Hunter,” I said, pausing as soon as I reached the door.

“Goodnight, Morgan,” he replied, his gaze locked with mine for several heated moments until I finally looked away. Neither of us reached out to touch each other, but we didn’t need to.
