Page 25 of Gilded Smoke

Violent shivers tore through my body at the mere realization that I was screwed no matter who had come in. The angels weren’t exactly pleased to see me chained up in the conference room, which didn’t eliminate the possibility that they wouldn’t have the balls to come take me out.

With so much time passing by without another noise, I’d stumbled down the rabbit hole of my own thoughts. It wasn’t until a slight movement out of the side of my eye that I realized the door was now wide open and someone hovered near it. I jolted back against the headboard with a yelp.

“Such a timid little mouse,” Asher mused. The edges of his lips had already curled into a pleased smirk while the amusement actually reached his eyes this time.

The carefree nature lurking just under that flawless surface was enough to make my breathing hitch again. That was nothing compared to when I realized he had completely shed his formal attire. He now stood before me in only jeans that were tight enough to hug his ass. There wasn’t a shirt in sight to conceal his finely sculpted upper body where every inch of his skin was still covered with scattered water droplets.

So that was the reason for the lengthy time before our paths crossed again. The bastard had come home to take a shower like it was a normal day — which apparently didn’t include having a prisoner stashed in an extra room.

As soon as he took a step in my direction, I curled my upper lip. “Don’t come near me.”

His eyebrow twitched and that grin grew. “Are you, Quinn Rossi…a hybrid female…trying to command me?” He continued his slow approach, every single step shaking the droplets loose and causing them to trail down his chest until they disappeared under the jean material hugging his waist. “I was under the impression that you knew exactly who I was based on that behavior alone. Hybrids don’t command a prince.”

“I don’t answer to you.”

A soft chuckle escaped him. “I’m afraid that’s not quite how this hierarchy has been established, pet. Humanity has always been beneath someone else. My kind are simply…taking over the angel’s assets and I’m afraid that includes you.”

Asher was now well within range of the bed. All it would take was a simple charge and he would overpower me. He seemed more content to go idle and to study my reaction.

Every part of me was reacting to the slim amount of distance between us. The original Quinn within me was yearning for something that would be easily summed up as my skin crawling with disgust. The current version couldn’t disagree more. While his words did leave me reeling, trapped between rage and shock, the presence of his magic weighing against my aura left me ready to melt like putty. The fact that he had yet to touch me again was the only reason I hadn’t succumbed.

Why the fuck isn’t he trying to force himself on me yet?

The demon prince had made it clear as day in front of the lords that he wouldn’t hesitate to take what he wanted — no matter what he was wanting from me.

When he finally did move, it was not the behavior that I was expecting. Every single part of me anticipated him to behave like a predator closing in on their prey, eager to enjoy before the fight was over and death was inevitable. As soon as his knee eased down onto the bed, his hand lashed out and he yanked me down toward him. It only took a matter of seconds before I was trapped underneath him.

It didn’t matter how hard I tried to ensure my silence during the sudden transition. A squeak managed to escape my lips regardless of my best efforts. The way his golden eyes flashed merely elevated how pleased he was by my reaction. That caused my entire body to be thrown into overdrive as I stared up at him.

There was absolutely no way I could miss the growing bulge in his pants with how little distance there was between us now. All it took was a slight shift on Asher’s part and he brushed up against me. The contact was so brief that it shouldn’t have caused me to react at all. I jolted as that single second sent an electrical spark through the rest of my body. My heart started pounding away in my chest while every inch of my skin felt like it was on fire.

This was nothing like how things had gone down with Beau. I’d been a horny mess that didn’t even get relief while he got his release. That didn’t mean it caused electricity like this.

Asher’s eyes narrowed slightly. It was not the reaction I expected from the physical contact and it was impossible to tell if he was pleased. He stared down at me for a moment before he started to pull away.

The absence I felt now was nothing compared to the interaction we’d shared at the prison — or the club. A soft whine escaped me. The noise coming from my mouth left me stunned. What the fuck had happened to the bastard child with a never-ending rage against the royal family? I was acting like a pup in heat.

This wasn’t normal.

I’d been taken once and the interaction was something that I would prefer to erase from my mind. While Beau had essentially betrayed me by leaving me to face the demons alone, he was still human. I couldn’t blame him for the fear that had been built into all of us against these creatures. That still didn’t change the breathtaking desire that oozed through me right now.

Asher surprised me by not retreating off the bed. Instead, he simply paused once he had reached my legs. Those golden eyes flickered back up to me as he tugged the waist of my leggings down. The edges of his lips twitched when the resisting material prompted me to raise my hips, granting him an easy removal. While he tossed them aside and worked on doing the same to the rough boxer shorts underneath, he never severed eye contact.

The second that I was completely exposed to him and the coolness of the air raised goosebumps along my skin, I couldn’t overlook the way his expression changed. The heat was still dominant in those stunning irises, yet the hunger was quickly taken over by something else. I stiffened as he drew close to my pussy and took a deep breath. What the fuck is he doing?

The emotions that tore through me weren’t ones that someone with common sense would be feeling right now. It was absolutely terrifying that he would find one reason or another to change his mind about keeping me in his possession. Perhaps my pussy didn’t carry the scent he was looking for — or I hadn’t cleaned up thoroughly enough at the facility and now he was disgusted.

A hint of rage leaked into my veins at the idea that I wasn’t clean. Hot water wasn’t a guaranteed piece of survival. It was a luxury that most humankind couldn’t afford to have. I absolutely despised the cold showers, but that didn’t mean it kept me from taking them. I’d only gone one night without maintaining my nightly ritual simply because my own mother had locked me out of the house.

Asher’s golden eyes returned to my face. “You are no longer a virgin.”

It should’ve appalled me how much weight those words had. The desire to avert my gaze was overwhelming, yet the prince managed to keep me imprisoned in a whole new way.

“Answer me, pet.”

Guilt haunted every fiber of my being. “No… I’m not.” My voice was so soft that it could barely count as a whisper. I wasn’t sure if he even heard me until he cocked his head to the side.

“So be it.”
