I didn’t dare make a plan beyond that.

And if Brent was out there looking for me?

We were all fucked.

Silas

Ahuge black wolf circled me, saliva dripping from its jaws. Despite a torn shoulder and a serious limp, the fucker wasn’t backing down. I’d had enough of this. It had been a long time since we fought so viciously and Tanner wasn’t the only one feeling the pain. He’d got a good few bites in and my back leg was throbbing like a motherfucker.

I waited until he leaped at me again and then spun at the last second, grabbing his throat in my jaw. We both crashed to the ground and shifted back. I winced at the weight of his heavy ass across my torso. The bastard needed to stop working out. He had way too many muscles.

We both groaned, but my body was already healing, just like his. I had hoped the freezing temperatures out here would cool him down, but he was still itching for a fight.

“Back the fuck off.” I snarled a warning when he came at me again, this time in human form.

“Not until you tell me why there’s a fucking human girl in our cabin!”

“I would have if you’d replied to my fucking message!”

“Message?” He took a step back, looking confused as steam rose from his body.

“Yeah, I fucking messaged you two days ago to explain why Eva was here. And you fucking ignored me like usual.”

For once, he had the decency to look slightly bashful. “My phone died. I was busy.”

“Real fucking helpful. And if the cabin had burned down?”

“I’m sure you’d have dealt with it.” His nonchalant shrug pissed me right the fuck off, but I didn’t react.

“So why do we have a human pet now?”

“She’s not a fucking pet.” I bristled at the inference she was only there to keep us entertained. Eva was far from that.

Tanner snorted with derision as he wiped the blood from his face. “She’s human. That’s about all they’re good for. We both know they die too easily.”

I couldn’t resist throwing one last punch, which caught him off guard. He tumbled sideways into a pile of snow and cursed up a storm. Ignoring his bitching, I grabbed my torn shorts and headed back inside. I was tired. If Tanner wanted to ask who Eva was and why she was here, he could wait until tomorrow now.

But he followed me in and dropped one hand on my shoulder before I could escape into my room.

“Tell me who she is.” Now the fight had left him, he had calmed, and his eyes were no longer gold, which meant his wolf had backed down.

I sighed. It looked like I wouldn’t be getting any sleep yet. Two seconds later, the door from the bedrooms opened and Cole appeared. He looked furious. Tanner threw his hands up.

“I’m sorry, OK!”

“You better be fucking sorry. You scared the living daylights out of Eva. She’s already traumatized without you making it worse!”

Tanner looked at us and frowned. “What do you mean, traumatized?”

“Eva was in a car accident just before the pass closed. Silas rescued her. She was lucky she didn’t die.”

“And she’s on the run from some abusive bastard,” I added.

“Who do I need to kill?” Tanner clenched his fists.

I raised one eyebrow. “I thought she was just a human. You made it quite clear you didn’t give a fuck,” I reminded him.

“Yeah, well, maybe I like the idea of ripping some scumbag to bits,” he said while cracking open a bottle of his favorite whiskey. Not bothering to offer us a glass, he dropped onto the sofa, still butt naked.
