“And I…I know how hard it can be.” She glanced away, her cheeks blushing from embarrassment. “I can help you.”

“With…?”

“If you’re….” She faltered, losing her words. But, taking a deep breath and meeting my gaze, she raised my wrist…and placed my hand on her breast, “…lonely.”

It was only now that I realized she’d taken down her hair. It lay in relaxed waves down her shoulders and back. The top three buttons of her shirt were undone. She’d definitely removed her bra.

“And your husband?” I asked curiously, not removing my hand.

“Well, he…” she quickly glanced away, but her thumb stroked my skin, “he’s always busy and I…” her teeth sunk into her lips, “I understand loneliness, too.”

When I said nothing, she stepped in closer, “I wouldn’t need any kind of attachment, and you and I… You’re here late. Alone. And so am I. It would be convenient.”

“Convenient?” I asked drolly. “Is that what you’re interested in, Mrs. Pearl? Because a man like me is anything but convenient.”

“More than that,” she rushed. “I’ve always been attracted to strong men. Dangerous.”

The woman didn’t know dangerous.

“And your husband isn’t filling those needs?” I leaned in close, pressing my lips to her ear, “Let me ask you, what kind of things are you into, Mrs. Pearl?” She inhaled a deep breath, her chest rising with the motion.

“I-I don’t know, but I’m willing to…try. Things.”

“Are you?” I squeezed her breast hard.

She squealed, then stumbled backwards, her eyes wide. “Mr. Cra—! What are you doing?”

“Unfortunately, I don’t think that you can handle my kind of kink, Mrs. Pearl.” I gave her a cool look. “I like pain with my pleasure, something you’re likely to be uncomfortable with.”

Her cheeks now blazed red in embarrassment. “And that—that girl can?”

I didn’t answer her, only continued to glare at her.

“And you know this for sure? She’s okay with the—the—the pain?”

Stepping forward, I yanked her to me by her arm. “If you ever confront me like that again, I will make sure the board fires you so quickly, you won’t have time to pack your office. And if you ever approach that girl, I will kill you. Is that understood?”

Her eyes were wide, her lips trembling, her eyes watering.

“Say you understand.”

“Y-yes—“ she stammered. “I under—stand.”

“Good.” I released my hold and stepped away. “I'm telling you this because your kindness towards the children is proven. And, so, I’m confident that your concern for the woman in my office is genuine, and not just because you want something from me. I assure you, she can handle my needs. Everything she and I do together is completely consensual. Now, I think it's time for you to leave.”

She stared at me mutely, clearly confused by my words and the sudden dismissal. Finally, lips clamping shut in a firm line, she turned to go.

“Mrs. Pearl?”

“Yes?” She edged towards the door.

“Can I assume that we can continue our friendly association and pretend this never happened? Or do I need to transfer you to another library? I wouldn’t want you to feel uncomfortable in the work place.”

“No,” she gave me a weak smile. “I’ll be fine.”

“Good.”

“Can I go now?”
