“I swear to take care of her. But you have to be honest with me. What else did they want?”

She shook her head, "Nothing."

I tightened my hold on her chin in warning, and her eyes darted upwards again, "I'm warning you, Summer. If you lie to me, you're not going to like your punishment."

"I swear," she met my gaze, her look bold and daring. "They said I needed to find out anything I could on you."

"Who asked you to do that?"

“Saul. Olivia was there. And Grace."

I inhaled a breath, absorbing this information. Saul was directly involved. Maybe he was on to me. Or maybe Maxon betrayed me.

"Grace?"

"Tucker's assistant?"

"I know who Grace is. What did she have to do with anything?"

"I don't know. I think Saul has some kind of hold over her, he said..." she hesitated, "he said he was going to punish her, instead of me."

"Because you're a Duvall," I answered for her. The sick bastard.

"I guess," her face paling. "Will he hurt her? Because of me?"

"Maybe." I answered honestly.

She exhaled a breath, her shoulders slumping.

"What did you do?" I asked her.

"I tried to get out of the contract."

Of course. Honestly I was surprised she'd caught on so quickly. It usually took longer for most of the girls. “That’s why they burned down your house.”

She nodded and I released my hold over her, straightening. "I have one more question for you, and I need you to answer honestly. Don't hold anything back. If you do, I can't help you. Do you promise you won't lie to me?"

She hesitated, then nodded. "Yes, sir."

"Tell me," I stared deep in her eyes, "why did you sign the contract with the Magnolia in the first place?"

She blinked, a soft pinkening of her cheeks. "Someone threatened me."

"With what?" I growled.

"With Callie," her throat bobbed. "They said they were going to take me to court. Sue for custody."

There was a roaring sound in my head, a rage overcoming me. Gritting my teeth, I held it all in, forcing control over myself. "Who? Who threatened you?”

"I don't know. It was anonymous, but they sent court documents from some company I’d never heard of.”

I ground my molars, my mind racing as I began to pace. Finally, I stopped before her.

"First of all, know that now that I've taken you in, I will protect both you and Callie. No matter what. Is that clear?"

"But I..." she straightened her back, "You said you didn't fuck virgins."

"I don't."
