“You knew?”

Cody chuckles. “I’m not an idiot, Rory. You think nobody has ever tried that before. But I could tell there was something going on there so I didn’t want to interfere. I figured if you saw each other enough, it would be inevitable.”

Heather grins behind him. “Don’t let him fool you. It was me. He doesn’t have a romantic bone in his body.”

“What about the other night?” Cody asks, his lips trailing along her cheek as he whispers something in her ear.

She flushes and smacks him on his broad shoulder. “Stop it, Cody.”

I’ve heard about these two and it’s strange to see these two people who were such a story for everyone in town, so much so that they’re thinking about making a movie about the ranch and the way these two fell in love, it’s just strange to see how much they love each other. How perfect they are for each other in person. They’re legends around here.

And they’re talking about us like we are. I turn my head and Rory’s green eyes, full of love, caress mine.

“Fuck, you scared me so bad.”

“What happened to him?”

“Max is sitting in jail where he’s gonna stay until he goes on trial for trespassing, assault with a deadly weapon in multiple instances and anything else they can think of to throw at him. He’s done for. You’re not going to ever have to worry about him again.”

I nod my head, wincing when the bandage tugs at a wayward strand of hair.

Rory reaches out and gently untangles my hair and the bandage, his fingers so soft that tears well in my eyes.

I stare up at his harsh, rugged face. “I’m so sorry that I got you involved in this,” I whisper, my fingers picking at the sheet.

“Not a problem, baby girl. I do not care that you involved me. I should be involved. You’re mine to protect, mine to love and mine to make love to every damn night for the rest of our lives. I want you to marry me as soon as we can manage it. I don’t want to spend more than one second apart from you.”

“What about your wife? How do you feel about replacing her?”

He shakes his head, the golden and silver strands gleaming in the bright lights of the hospital room. “You’re not replacing her. She was never mine. She shouldn’t have been with me but she just hated being alone. We were friends and then we made a mistake and thought it was more than that. We ruined both of our lives with that mistake.”

“What if the same thing happens with us?”

He shakes his head and grins. “Not gonna happen. You are irreplaceable.”

I flush and roll my eyes. “Right. Sure. Don’t blow smoke up my ass, Rory. One woman is much like another.”

He fists the blanket and growls. “Don’t talk about yourself like that. You are more than just a woman. You’re my woman. The sun to my moon. The light to my dark. You mean everything to me and there’s no replacing you so you better never disappear. Because if you try and leave me, I will hunt you down, tie you up and fuck you until you can’t stand.”

Heather groans. “That’s our cue to leave. I don’t think I’ll be able to get rid of that visual no matter how hard I try,” she mutters under her breath.

As so0n as they leave, Rory crawls into my bed with me and I cuddle into his big, wide chest, sighing and finally feeling like I’m where I’m supposed to be.

He sighs and kisses my cheek softly. “I love you so much, angel. You mean the world to me. Don’t ever scare me like that though. I swear I almost lost my mind.”

I smile and hold his hand to my mouth, kissing it gently, loving the feel of his arms around me, feeling his heart pounding under my cheek.

“I promise.”

And he sighs and closes his eyes, his arms tightening around me, his breath stirring my hair.

I never thought I’d find my home with a man. Never thought I could trust anyone like I trust Rory. This man, this wild, grumpy, endlessly loving man is the best man I’ve ever met.

He is the living embodiment of all my fantasies and I can’t believe how lucky I am to have found him.

I close my eyes and smile, breathing in the scent of him, letting his deep breathing lull me back to sleep.

Letting the peace that he always brings wash over me. I sigh and drift off.
