She glares at me for a few seconds before bursting into laughter. “You.” She points at me. “You’re so easy.”

For her, I’m easy. Not for anyone else.

I grab a towel and wet it. Leia nabs it from me before I can clean her face. I scowl. I want to take care of her. She doesn’t have to do everything by herself.

“All done,” Isla declares.

The cookie sheet has eight blobs instead of twelve spoonfuls of dough, but I’m not complaining. I place it in the oven and set the timer.

“What movie should we watch?” I ask.

“Spy Kids: Armageddon!”

“I haven’t seen it.”

Isla’s eyes widen. “You haven’t seen it?”

“No.”

“Have you seen any of the Spy Kids movies?”

I don’t even know what the Spy Kids movies are. “No.”

“Yippee! We can start from the beginning,” she says, and Leia moans.

“What’s wrong?” I whisper to Leia when Isla is in the living room.

“I’ve seen those movies a million times. The joys of being a parent.”

I wouldn’t mind watching a movie a million times. It’s a small price to pay in my opinion. My face must give me away because she grabs my wrists.

“I’m sorry. I’m being insensitive.”

“It’s fine.”

“No, it’s not.” She clears her throat. “And I should also make it clear I accept your apology.”

“You do?”

She narrows her eyes on me. “No using the dimples.”

“Didn’t realize I was.”

“You’re trouble.”

“But I’m the good kind.”

“There’s a good kind?”

I bend close to whisper into her ear. “I’ll show you.”

She shivers. I long to pull her into my arms. If whispering in her ear causes her to shiver, I want to experience how she responds to my tongue or my fingers on her body.

The doorbell rings before I can put those plans into action.

“I’ll get it,” Isla shouts, and Leia hurries after her.

Run away, Leia. Run away. Running only makes me want to chase you more.
