"How big do you think my stomach is?" she laughed, the sound choked.
I laid another kiss on her crown, part of me settling enough for me to open the bond more, to show her more of me. She sniffled again, a hitched breath that told me she was crying hard.
"We'll be okay," I promised, and wondered how the fuck I'd got here from the empty denial I'd been in minutes ago. "It doesn't feel like it, but we'll be okay, my rose."
I inhaled my first full breath in days, the weight on my chest starting to ease.
"I love you so much it should be physically impossible," I said, tightening my arms around her. "You're half of my soul, my whole goddamn world, and I swear, no one will ever hurt you again. Including you. Understood?"
"Understood," she choked out, and my stomach dropped. Fuck, I'd been too hard on her, I'd—
She drew back, and she was smiling. Tears tracked down her cheeks, but she was smiling, her eyes creased and shining. "I love you, Malakai. I don't know what I'd do without you."
"You never have to find out."
Haley sighed, tension relaxing from her, her smile still in place. At least until a fist hammered on the bathroom door. It was either Wane or Em; they were the only ones with enough manners to knock instead of just bursting in.
"Something's happening," Wane called through the door. "It's on the TV. We need to come up with an evacuation plan."
Evacuation? For fuck’s sake! Would we ever get a fucking break?

Iwasn't entirely serious about the domestic bliss thing, so it was trippy as fuck to watch Emlyn and Wynvail peacefully coexist in the kitchen, a shopping bag of newly delivered ingredients open on the white marble island as Em mixed up a batch of pancakes and Wyn browned meat in a pan for stew. None of us were speaking about the herd of elephants in the room. Plural.
I'd died—and come back.
Wynvail had died—and come back.
Verena stared into space, far too quiet.
We were all mid-mental-breakdown.
Our king had been eaten, and Hell was falling apart.
