Dylan kissed her shoulder and flattened his palm over first one breast and then the other. “What are you thinking about?”

She shrugged, unwilling to give voice to her concerns that she already felt closer to him and Hunter even though she hadn’t known them for a full day yet. She didn’t want to be that horrid, clingy female who couldn’t take a hint when the relationship ended. And yet, his absolutes on marriage gave her pause.

What did she want?

“Are you upset that my tattoos represent a reminder for a lack of commitment? Because while I can’t promise it will be easy, you still make me want to at least try.”

“It’s not that. Not really. I understand your feelings. I’d probably be the same way.”

“Then what?”

She turned and stared deeply into his soulful, dreamy, bedroom eyes. Her heart flipped over. If he ever fell for her, she would never ever make him sorry he had.

Words spilled from her like water from a failing dam. “I’m upset that I’m falling for you way too fast. I wasn’t looking for anything permanent until we kissed in the bar. I’m afraid that I’ll end up brokenhearted if you never change your mind. And yet I have no claim on your life. We barely know each other. I know that, but—”

“I disagree.” He stroked his hand from her collarbone to her belly button, stopping her impending outburst. “I’d say we know each other damn well.”

“In bed.”

He shrugged. “It was a good place for us to start. What’s wrong with that?”

“Nothing. I guess, except that I’m fairly adrift in my life. I don’t even have a safe place to live or a job right now and here I am hiding out with you in a different city with loan sharks and federal law enforcement people chasing me. I wonder what the hell I’m doing and how in the world I even got here.”

She turned her head. He looked stunned. “I’ll tell you what you’re doing. You’re staying with friends. We don’t have to have known each other for a lifetime to be friends, right?”

“I suppose not.”

He drilled her with another bone-meltingly seductive gaze and added, “You’re hanging out with your new friends for a while to get your bearings. You’ll also have time to fall all the way in love with us. Then you can stay forever, if that is your desire.”

“What will I be to you? If you’ve decided not to ever marry again? Your shared mistress?”

He remained quiet for quite a few moments, finally saying, “No. Eventually, I believe I’ll want you to be mine on a more permanent basis. Maybe I’m sorry I didn’t wait for you in the first place.”

“What about the reminders you have needled permanently into your skin for all the rest of eternity about not ever wanting to get married again?”

He shrugged. “I’ll just add another bumblebee with boobs next to it and make up a different story of how finding you made me realize how foolishly wrong I was.” His smile made her want to believe every word he said.

“Is that so? Just like that?”

“Sure. I’ll simply change the story. The new tattoo will be a new reminder that I needed to find a good, sexy, dancing-in-a-bar, desirable Mrs. Bumblebee instead of a money-grasping, psycho, bat-shit-crazy ex Mrs. Bee.”

Lilianna cracked a smile. “She couldn’t have been that bad if you married her. You must have loved her once.”

He pondered her statement for a few moments before answering, “I was a different person back then. But she was truly horrible. A total personality change the moment we said our vows. I swear the moment we turned to face the guests at the church, she sneered.

“Then she took half of my net wealth after making a really good run to get it all, before divorcing me because I wanted deviant sex more than once every other month.”

“Deviant sex? Like two men sharing one woman?” Lilianna didn’t truly believe that ménage sex was deviant, but people could be strange where sex was involved.

He shook his head. “That lifestyle change came later. No. My ex-wife took issue with taking off all of our clothes, and pressing our nasty, naked, sweaty bodies together repeatedly for more than seventeen seconds. She acted like having sex with me was completely repugnant.”
