Kendall said, “So tell me, Hunter, given the recent unusual activities both at our compound gate and the park, do you think we should just let anyone go in and out of the wooden doors to wander about near our homes?”

“She’s not just anyone, Kendall,” Hunter said, the beat of his heart firmly lodged in his throat. He turned to stare at her. She smiled like he’d rescued her, when in fact he was the one who’d gotten her brought into jail in the first place.

“I’m starting to understand that, Hunter.” His expression shifted to one of amused and tolerant, rather than belligerent and expressive like Zane.

“It’s fine, Hunter. I’m fine.” Lilianna didn’t look worse for wear.

“She’s free to go. Right, Zane?” Kendall asked.

“Sure.”

Hunter pushed out a sigh to release the worry he’d felt over not knowing where she was. “In the future, I’ll consider your thoughts on the matter of guests and the wooden door entrance.” He motioned for Lilianna to join him. She held up the handcuffs.

Zane promptly pulled out a key and removed them as Hunter gave him another malevolent death stare. “Handcuffs, Zane? Really?”

“You couldn’t make a single phone call, Hunter? Really?” Zane was again unperturbed by his fierce stare.

Hunter approached, slid his arm around Lilianna’s shoulders, and guided her out of the jailhouse without another word. He didn’t trust himself not to raise his voice.

Once outside Lilianna hugged his waist. “Thank you. I wasn’t sure what to do.”

“That was completely my fault. I’ve never invited a guest here before. I didn’t think they’d take it so seriously.”

“Well, they had a point with the whole fire thing from last night.”

“Maybe. You weren’t scared, were you?”

“No. After I got over the initial shock of being handcuffed and carted off to jail Old West-style, it was sort of exciting.” She grinned and his heart flipped over in his chest.

“I appreciate that you didn’t want to rat me out for letting you in by way of the bank door. You didn’t have to do that.”

One shoulder lifted. “No problem. Thanks for coming to break me out. I was truly never so glad to see anyone as when you stormed inside the jailhouse.”

“Sorry Zane snatched you.”

“Don’t be. He was very nice to me. Even though I ultimately didn’t cooperate.”

Hunter whisked her back to their home via the tunnel. They walked up just as Dylan pulled in with a large brown paper grocery bag.

Lilianna waved and called out, “I don’t suppose you went clothes shopping for me, did you?”

“Nope. I got a very simple dinner.”

“What do you consider simple?”

“A large package of steaks, a bag of salad, loaf of Italian bread, and a few big potatoes for baking. You know. Man food.” He handed Hunter the bag and put his free arm around her shoulder. He kissed her on the cheek as if he did it every day of the week.

Hunter realized that he wanted to have her in his life every day of the week. Having her to come home to each night would be not only refreshing but also desirable. He knew he’d look forward to the end of the day and seeing her smiling face.

“Are you cooking or am I?” she asked peeking into the top of the grocery bag.

“We could always cook together,” Dylan said. The word “together” was expressed very provocatively right before he pressed his mouth to hers for what looked like a deep, satisfying kiss.

A kiss that Hunter wanted to re-create once Dylan was done.

Maybe dinner would be a little late tonight in favor of lust and sex, satisfaction, and multi-participation.

The only thing he knew for certain was that no one would be on the sidelines watching first and waiting for a turn.

Lilianna climbed the stairs with Dylan after they’d quickly stowed the few groceries. The silent vote to postpone dinner for a little while also included lots of visceral staring at each other.

Dylan’s fingers lightly stroked her arm, sending an urgent message to straight between her legs. No passing go, no stopping for anything. It was time for sex. She was ready.
