Hunter looked at her and then at Dylan. His expression wasn’t a frown but wasn’t a smile either.

Lilianna turned to Dylan. “What about you? I know you don’t want to get married. Does that mean that you don’t want to have children either?”

“Actually, I haven’t ever given it much thought.” He looked deeply into her eyes. Not smiling or frowning.

Her lips pursed into a firm, unhappy look. “But you wouldn’t ever marry me regardless of how many bastard children we brought into the world, do I have that correct at least?” She sounded like a miserable shrew, and yet she couldn’t stop.

“I didn’t say that.” He looked miserable. “I don’t know how I feel about children.”

Hunter squeezed her. “Dylan had a bad experience regarding marriage. But I doubt that he’s as adamant about that subject anymore. Right, Dylan?”

“Yes. I already told you that you make me reconsider. And you do. Honestly.” Dylan looked miserable. Was it because he was taken off guard by this discussion or because he was never going to tell her what she wanted to hear?

Tears slipped over the edge of her lower lids. “I’m not sure if that’s good enough.” Her emotions were a steady mix of I want what I want and what the fuck and give me my dreams right this minute. It was unfair of her to test them. She shook her head, trying to calm down.

She probably needed to make several apologies for all the drama she’d spouted in just the last several minutes.

They hadn’t even told her they loved her, but she loved them dearly, and knew she was likely headed for heartbreak. “Maybe I’m just very emotional about what just happened. Maybe I need some time to absorb all of it. We can talk about it later. Can we go now?”

“Yes. Let’s get out of here.” Hunter distanced himself. Lilianna was a bit forlorn about her own snarky, nonconciliatory attitude. Not to mention the recent events they’d just gone through.

“We’ll stop by your landlady’s house on the way out of town, okay?”

“Okay.” Lilianna needed to get away from this place. Needed to consider her life now. Needed to think long and hard about what she wanted and what she’d be willing to give up if she remained with two men she was desperately in love with, but who also had flaws she wasn’t certain she could withstand forever.

The landlady had the box of things, which actually turned out to have a few of her parents’ things in it. She thanked her and quickly got back in the car, insisting on riding in the backseat so she could think as Hunter drove and Dylan rode shotgun.

By the time they got back to Enclave, Lilianna wasn’t certain she should continue to live with them. Her heart was broken. Without speaking another word, she conjured all sorts of heated arguments and talks of her giving up her dreams in order to live their ménage lifestyle.

The minute she saw the city limits sign she then questioned her reason to go back to their house. She had money. She wasn’t dependent on them for her very existence.

It wasn’t like Sammy was on her trail anymore. It wasn’t like she didn’t now have the means—in cash no less—to spend on a nice hotel room for a few nights until she figured things out for herself.

“I’d like for you to take me to a motel,” she said. “I think I need some time on my own to think some things through.”

Chapter Fourteen

“No,” Dylan said before he even realized he was going to answer.

He was a mass of nerves. The idea of walking down the aisle even with the beautiful, desirable Lilianna made him break out in a cold sweat. He knew his demands were childish. He knew he needed to get over it, but something held him back. And if he didn’t figure it out pretty quickly and fix things, he might lose the only woman he’d ever loved.

“What do you mean, no? It’s not really up to you, is it?” Lilianna asked. She sounded so upset. “I want to go to a hotel. It’s not an unreasonable request.”

Hunter, not usually slotted in the role of negotiator, said, “Let’s all just settle down for a minute. Tell you what, I’ll take you to the local Enclave motel, but before you get a room, we’ll go have a cup of coffee at the diner next door. The three of us can discuss this, right?”
