Isabelle laughed. “Is it wrong of me to enjoy the idea that you think I’m dangerous?”

Warrick smiled and eased forward again. “No.” His tone of voice was mellow. That was dangerous to Colton’s way of thinking. He didn’t seem to want to follow the strict rules he himself put in place. Unbelievable. Colton wasn’t used to being in the role of heavy, but Warrick left him little choice.

“Here’s the deal,” Colton said, feeling a bit out of his element as the purveyor of their all-important rules. “Sexually, we often enjoy a few darker practices specifically involving light bondage that might require a safe word on occasion. Problem with that?”

“No,” she said, staring at Warrick’s mouth. “But I’ve never done anything like that before either. You’ll likely have to explain everything very carefully. I don’t want to do it wrong.”

“No problem,” Colton responded. At the same time Warrick said, “You can’t do it wrong.” As Colton mulled that over, thinking his friend had never ever had that sentiment before, Isabelle grinned.

Meanwhile, Warrick’s smile mimicked his perception of the devil after having seized a fresh soul for hell.

Colton knew exactly what Warrick was thinking. Ooh. Lucky us. Bondage virgin. But he kept those dangerous thoughts to himself.

He continued, “Not to worry. We’ll tell you exactly what you need to know along the way. Also, we won’t expect you to be ready yet, but double penetration is also a part of our typical playbook. We’ll make sure you’re ready for it, but it’ll likely take a few days.”

“Okay,” she said, then looked like she wanted to say something else, but simply swallowed hard and remained quiet.

Colton readied himself to express the final important rule that Warrick wanted all of their potential bedmates to understand. They didn’t do permanent relationships. No exceptions. Not ever.

He opened his mouth with the intent to soften the blow, but still express that usually vital sentiment, but Warrick sent him a positively deranged look, and Colton closed his lips.

“Anything else?” she asked.

“No,” Warrick said with finality.

“What about the other thing?” Isabelle’s gaze rose to Warrick’s eyes.

“The other thing?” Colton asked. She glanced his way with a sad look before turning back to Warrick.

“The other thing where you never stay with the same woman for very long. I figured that would be rule number one.”

* * * *

Warrick hated that he had this particular reputation. He hated to hear Isabelle express that truth to his face. However, it was the truth. Well, usually it was. So why was he so reluctant to speak that rule out loud to her? Why didn’t he want to tell Isabelle the facts?

He didn’t know what he hated more, his wavering attitude toward Isabelle or his lack of control currently fucking over his routine approach. Clearing his throat to kill a little time, Warrick was unsure of what he was about to say. Which was also very unlike him.

“The truth is, I’m not ready to say that to you.” Mentally, he patted himself on the back for getting the words out in the correct order.

“Meaning?”

“Let’s see how things go.”

Isabelle crossed her arms, assuming a stiff stance. “No. If that’s a distinct possibility, I need to know now. I need to prepare myself.”

Colton had been giving Warrick ferociously foul looks since they’d entered Isabelle’s house. He couldn’t blame his friend. Insofar as he never acted this way, it must be a shock to Colton to hear him waffle and waver over every single one of their previously hard and fast rules.

Luckily, his friend hadn’t called him out on it. At least not yet.

First of all, Warrick was always the one who ensured the rules were clearly understood, but the moment he saw her open her door, he had to enter and embrace her. When he smelled Isabelle’s sweet essence, he only wanted to touch her, kiss her, and possess her. The rules be damned.

Using his most seductive tone, he said, “Oh, you’ll need to prepare yourself all right. But we’ll help you with that.” What? Avoidance? He was such a fucking coward.

“Are you going to break my heart?” she asked plainly.

Warrick looked from her concerned face merely seeking the truth, to Colton’s wary and now hostile expression. Warrick was being completely unfair. She was asking for specifics, and he needed to tell her the truth.

In their checkered past, a long relationship amounted to about a month, and honestly, even that was a stretch. But then he remembered how he felt in the master bedroom at Colton’s old homestead.
