And it was right about then that I heard it.

Close.

Too close.

Feet and hands on rungs.

My fist slammed down hard on the trapdoor just in time, making Rey jolt so hard that she half moved out from under me, slamming her head into the wall, eyes hazy but startled.

"I'm up," Roan's voice called, clearly unaware that Rey was up here with me.

I pressed up onto my knees, tossing Rey her shirt and sweater, watching as she struggled back into them with hands that were shaking with unfulfilled need.

She moved to stand, walking over to the wall, looking down at Navesink Bank as she took long, deep breaths, trying to bring herself back down. I stayed on the floor beside the door, moving my fist off of it so Roan could move inside, looking more rested than I had seen him in a while.

"Did you fall asleep on the doo... ah," he cut off as soon as his eyes fell on the back of Rey who was tense. It wasn't something I thought she could ever be when she was as airy as she generally was. But it was in the tightness to her shoulders, the way her hands were balled up. "Didn't realize you had company," he said apologetically, giving me a knowing look. "Why don't you two kids head down?" he suggested, and I knew what he was implying. To my bedroom.

But I wasn't going to do that.

Not because she didn't want it.

She wanted it.

I did too, judging by the fucking painful feeling in my balls at getting so close.

But now, with a second to think now that I wasn't watching her arch and writhe in need, wasn't feeling how wet she was even through her panties and leggings and shorts, wasn't listening to her trying to hold in her response to my touch, yeah, I realized I wanted to give her what she genuinely wanted.

To take her out.

To get to know each other a little before we hit the sack.

Having spent years only knowing women who genuinely just thought about me as a biker, as a cock to fill a hole, yeah, I found I really wanted that too.

More of the connection.

I knew it wasn't smart.

I knew it was going to mean shit was going to get deeper, deep enough that there would be no way to surface again without both of us being covered in dirt.

But, somehow, I just didn't care this time.

It was both exhilarating... and fucking terrifying.

"Rey, come on, let's get going," I said, standing, moving over toward her when she still hadn't turned to greet Roan or move to follow me, reaching down to take her hand, giving it a reassuring squeeze. A silent promise, if she knew it or not. I'd make up for the interruption. Ten fucking fold. When the time was right again.

At the touch, maybe not anticipating it, her head jerked over to me. I saw it there. The clawing need. It almost made me want to tell Roan to fuck off, get down on my knees, drag down her pants, and give her all she wanted and more.

Almost.

"You first," I told her as I led her to the stairs, watching as she gave Roan a small, distracted little smile before disappearing.

"Some shit isn't worth fighting," he told me, giving me a nod as I moved down the ladder as well.

Roan, see, he knew his shit.

I knew this could turn ugly so easily.

I knew I could end up hurting her, something I never wanted to do.

I knew this could send me into a deeper hole again if it all blew up in my face like I had been worrying.

But still, as I got to the bottom rung and found Rey leaning against the wall, seeming not to trust her legs to hold her still, I had to agree with Roan.

Some shit isn't worth fighting.SEVENReyI was pretty sure my legs didn't gain feeling again until hours later.

Sure, they worked.

I knew this because I somehow made it down the ladder and then followed Reeve through the building and out front to his truck.

But they were numb the entire time.

I guess this was because the only thing I was truly aware of all that time was how much I needed him. So much that it hurt. It was painful how in need of his touch I was. I had been close. So close. Another swipe or two and I would have been crashing into a blinding orgasm.

Getting that ripped away from me had been, well, disorienting. I felt like I was in my body, but not at the same time.

"You alright?" he asked when we were halfway back to my place, stopped at a red light. I could feel his gaze on my profile, and could just about make out the slightest curling of his lips.
