She puts her water bottle back onto the bench, taking a seat as the principal is initiating the prize ceremony.
I take a seat with the rest of the team, alongside all the students, as all the events are over, and the day is wrapping up.
Winnie lets out a breath. “Look at you, always staring at me with your silly smile.”
“Hey, I think my smile is golden.”
“Indeed.”
I stroke her thigh with the back of my hand, trying my best to be subtle. “Congrats on the win.”
“I have a good coach.”
“You worked hard. I hope you at least like floatball.”
“I do. It is also great for me to get to know other staff.”
Jackel is sitting on the next bench, but I catch him glancing at us. He finds out that I found out. He winks and looks away soon enough. Sitting next to us in the staff room. He was one of the first to know that Winnie and I are together. He is a friend, so we’re probably fine.
More importantly...
I lower my voice in Winnie’s ear. “Prize, right?”
Her cheeks flash bright red, even redder than when she just got back from the field. “Shut up.”
“That’s not very polite, Miss Bailey.”
She rolls her eyes, but her smile outs her. “Are you sure about that, Mr. Stek?”
“Prize, yes.”
She sucks in a breath and refuses to look me in the eye. Maybe I get to her head now.
