Jo’s house, on the other hand, continued to sit empty with no one willing to purchase it. She even thought she might sell it to Paul Turner, since he wanted it so badly, even if she had to take a bit of a loss to hand it over to him, but he had disappeared. King said he had just simply vanished and even Saul didn’t know to where.

Meanwhile, the house withered away. It’s magic now lost on Jo and apparently, anyone else that Trey tried to show it to. If they could finish it, get it in prime shape, then maybe, but the way it stood, it was useless to anyone, just like many of the other houses on the street that remained empty.

Of course, all of that had been set aside with recent events. King had called her down to the clubhouse and proposed in front of all of his brothers. There had been a grand party in which she had been offered drink after drink but had turned down every one due to her condition. Finally, one of the older women had caught on and came to sit beside her.

“So, how far along are you?” she asked.

“What?”

“Well, King has been resistant to taking a mate for a very long time and now, all of a sudden, he’s marrying a woman he’s known only a few months, a stranger from halfway across the country, at that.”

“And that automatically makes me pregnant?”

“No, but not drinking when you usually sip wine at celebrations in this clubhouse does,” the woman replied with a wink.

Jo studied her face. She didn’t seem to have any ill intent and it wasn’t really a secret at this point, but they were just waiting until she was far enough along to be safely past the point where there could be any mistake or potential early loss.

“Not far. Only about a month now.”

“That’s wonderful. Don’t worry. I won’t tell a soul. I’m just happy to see King finally coming into his own. I don’t know what you are aware of about how things work around here, but he’ll be eligible to take over as president if he’s married. Having a kid on the way will pretty much make him a shoe-in.”

“Lucky him,” Jo replied, as if she had no idea.

“Yep, and with Paul gone, there’s no one else that is even up for consideration.”

Jo pondered this for a moment. Was it possible that he had anything to do with Paul’s disappearance? She didn’t think he would have harmed him, but perhaps he paid him to go away. He had been upset that Paul had put her in danger and annoyed by his attempts to defraud her, but not so much that he would have taken things into his own hands, surely.

Still, the fact that Paul might have been up for his place as president did make her reconsider that he could have done something to aid in his disappearance. It just seemed too convenient was all.

She was jolted from her thoughts as he came along and swept her into his arms, swinging her around the floor in a celebratory dance. She might have resisted drinking, but he had well enjoyed a few drinks piled on him by his pack.

“You about ready to go home, future Mrs. Wilson?”

“I could use some sleep,” she admitted with a slow smile.

Any thoughts of what he might have done in his past or in conjunction with Paul going away slipped her mind as he kissed her and announced their departure to everyone amid shouts regarding early honeymooning and sampling the bride.

It was all just playful banter and didn’t bother Jo. She drove them back to his cabin as he snoozed quietly beside her, waking as they arrived home. It had been a good night. One she had thoroughly enjoyed. Curling into the small of his back, she rested her head there, sleeping peacefully against him.

No matter what happened, she knew that from now on, she would always be safe in his arms. There was comfort in that like none she’d ever known. Her future husband was kind, but he was also an alpha male and would one day be the leader of his pack. It had respect and awe for who he was and what he did for the men and women in his club, people he considered family.

Still, she felt a familiar pull. The magic was back, and she wasn’t sure why, but the abandoned house she had once loved called out to her, no matter how much she resisted.

It was Sunday afternoon before it occurred to her to go look at it, but she wasn’t sure why she felt the need to do so. Perhaps it was because, with a baby on the way, she and King had begun to look for a bigger house to live in closer to town.
