I looked out of my dorm window, keeping an eye out for him. When I caught a glimpse of his car coming around the corner, I grabbed my purse but then hesitated for a few seconds.

Would I seem too eager if I went outside and waited for him? Probably. The best thing to do was to stay inside and wait for him to let me know he’d arrived.

A few minutes later, his car pulled up outside, and he stepped out. He glanced up and saw me. Great. I was sure in his eyes I looked like a desperate saddo who watched from the window waiting for her date to show up.

I wiggled my fingers, and he waved back. If I buzzed him in, I’d catch hell from the RA.

I left my room and ran down every step. Playing it cool wasn’t something I knew how to do.

When I stepped outside, he smiled warmly. “You look beautiful.”

“Why this old thing?” I placed my hands on my hips and gave a wiggle. “You look nice, too.” He looked more than nice. He looked delicious—sexy. I’d never seen him in a pair of jeans before, and wow, he should wear them more often.

Tanner also wore a short-sleeved button-down shirt, and he’d trimmed his beard and styled his hair. I hoped by the end of the night, I’d get the chance to run my fingers through his hair and mess it up.

For a few seconds, I stood there staring at him like an idiot.

“Sorry about dinner,” he said. “The meeting with the Halpern family went longer than expected.” He opened the passenger door and helped me in. He then ran around the front of the car and slid into the driver’s seat.

“How did the meeting go?”

He blew out a breath and started the car. “How I imagined. She’s back on the team.”

My nose wrinkled. “You’re kidding?”

“Principal Santino and her father agreed to detention for a month, but she can take part in the meet next week. Miranda argued it was all a misunderstanding. We’ll both have to keep a close eye on her.”

“That sucks to have your decision overruled like that. I’m sorry.”

His lips twisted, and he shrugged. “Deep down, she’s a good kid, but there’s only so much I can do. In a few months, she won’t be my problem.”

“Let’s hope she doesn’t seriously hurt someone before then.”

When we pulled up to a stoplight, he glanced over. “For the rest of the night, no talk about school. It’s just you and me on a first date.”

My insides turned to jelly at the thought that this was the first of many. “I’d like that.”****

Besides us, the theater was empty. We made our way to our seats clutching oversize popcorn, candy, and sodas. “I guess not a lot of people want to see a movie about Jackie Joyner Kersee.”

“It helps when you know the owner,” he said and winked.

“What?” I shout-whispered. “You mean we’re going to be the only ones here? We have the entire place to ourselves?”

“I made a few calls.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever been the only one in the theater before. This is super exciting.”

We selected the center seats in the center aisle, and when we were comfortable, the lights dimmed.

“Thank you for doing this,” I whispered, settling into my seat. I didn’t know why I was whispering since we were the only ones there. “I’ve been so excited about this movie for the longest time.”

The opening scenes lit up the screen, and I reached for some buttery popcorn. But when I went to grab a fist full, my fingers brushed against his. I froze and snatched my hand away. Touching him had turned me on way too much. Dampness coated my inner thighs, and I crossed my legs in an attempt to dull the ache.

“Sorry.”

“Nothing to be sorry for.” He took a bag of M&Ms from his pocket. “Mind if I mix some in?”

“Yum! My favorite.”

Just as he went to open the bag, it fell to the floor. He leaned down to grab it, and as he did, his knuckles brushed against my ankle. I shivered and nibbled on my lower lip to stop from gasping.

Tanner slid his fingers up the length of my leg, over my knee, and along the top of my thigh. When he reached the hem of my skirt, he stopped. “You have no idea how much I’ve wanted to touch your legs. Every time I see you stretching with the girls, I have to go into my office and jerk off to thoughts of you.”

I swallowed with difficulty and stared at him, not sure what to say.

“Simply looking at you makes me rock hard and leaves me dripping? Does that scare you, Brenda?”

“No,” I whispered, my breaths picking up speed. “The truth is, I, uh, I’ve had a crush on you forever.”
