She missed her dad so much in that moment. In the days leading up to the wedding she’d cried more than once over the fact that he wouldn’t be there to see it. He’d maneuvered them with his will, hoping it would get them back together. It had.

He would have been happy to see them get married. Maybe, wherever he was, he was watching right now and smiling. She liked to believe that.

She took a deep breath and let it out slowly releasing the sadness that his memory had raised. Joy flooded in to fill the gap. “I’m better than okay, Mike. I’m happy.”

He smiled wide, flashing his teeth. “Well, then, we better get up there before Sam passes out. He’s looking a little anxious about the fact that you stopped in the middle of the aisle.”

Charlie laughed as she looked ahead and saw Mike was right. Sam did look worried. He was probably wondering if she was going to change her mind, but she was done with being unsure about what she wanted.

He was her future.

She swept a glance over Nick and Katie, standing at Sam’s side, and then over the watching audience. Almost everyone she knew was there to share in their day. Her mother was dabbing at the corner of her eyes and sniffling— maybe the tears were even authentic.

Charlie turned back to face Sam. With her eyes on him alone, she tightened her grip on Mike’s arm and took the final steps to join him.

The End.
