“I know. Anyway, it probably serves her right. After what she did to you? Yeah, you’re right. She deserves whatever she gets.”

“I know I’m right. That bitch can suck it.” I slapped my hand over my mouth and felt my eyes go wide in surprise. I hadn’t meant to say that out loud. It made Stuart and Brooklyn both laugh though, and I couldn’t help but join them. If only she could see us now, after all the things she’d done to break me. I wasn’t broken at all.

“You get so crudely funny when you’ve had a drink,” Brooklyn teased, her eyes full of glittering amusement.

“I know. You’d think I’d get more genteel or some shit, but oh no, I turn into a gutter-mouthed troll.” That made me laugh even more, and Brooklyn rolled her eyes.

“I think you need coffee, missy.” She got up to make me some, and I was the one to roll my eyes.

“I know I’m a dude and all, Nic, but I’m glad you’ve lost your, ahem, you know. And that you got some payback with Amanda,” Stuart said from a dark blue, velvety recliner he’d sat down in. One arm was wonky on it, but it didn’t smell, and it still worked. A nice addition to their first home, I thought with a smile as I sprawled out on the couch.

“Can I have a blanket?” I asked as exhaustion took over. I think that had more to do with being relaxed, slightly drunk, and good food than anything. I hadn’t done enough that day to be tired and I wasn’t usually one to drink. I didn’t mind it, even if I had wanted to stay up longer with Brooklyn.

“Sure, I’ll get you one.” He got out of the chair and went in to tell Brooklyn not to worry about the coffee.

She brought me a blanket a minute later and draped it over me. She got down on the floor on her knees and I opened my eyes.

“Hi honey, I’m home,” I whispered, the world spinning a little now and all I wanted to do was get to sleep.

“I know, and I’m glad you are. I love you, Nic, I want you to know that. I’m glad you’ve found some kind of happiness too, honey. You deserve every bit of happiness that comes your way.” She brushed my hair back from my face and kissed my cheek before she stood up and left.

All was right in the world again. The fear had gone, as had the worry. I only had one more person to tell my secret to and then I’d know how my future would be. But that was for later. For now, I needed sleep.Chapter Twenty

“We’ve rented a room in Charlotte for tomorrow night.” The text came in from Michael a few weeks later.

I smiled, pleased that I’d get to see them before they left. The weeks up to this trip had been busy ones. They’d organized a lot of things that one of the orphanages over there needed and were taking them over with them. That had involved a lot of stuff to do with customs procedures, last-minute checks, and a lot of phone calls.

Apparently, they went to the same town in Spain every year, a place their mother loved and had been going there their entire lives. It was nice, I thought, that they were able to do that. They’d become friends with the locals over the years and when they found out a local orphanage had been decimated by a freak flood; they went to work organizing aid for them. I was really proud of them, but I’d thought we wouldn’t have any time together at all.

To know I’d get to see them before they left for an entire month was good news. I needed it. Life had started to drag without them in it. Even if we’d only spent two days together, their attention had done amazing things for me, and it wasn’t just the sex. It was the conversations, the company, the way they all made me think and laugh.

Now, I’d have a few more hours of it before they left.

“What time shall I arrive?” I sent back, hoping for an early time.

“Check-in is at 11, so then? We’ve rented a suite, so there will be room for all of us.”

If I knew them, it wasn’t just any suite either. It would be at one of the most expensive hotels in Charlotte. I looked forward to a little pampering and a whole lot of sex.

“Wear that red dress, please?” Michael sent in another text.

“I will, darling, with the black underwear,” I teased.

“Oh, now you’re just killing me,” he quickly texted back.

“Aw, you poor baby. I’ll take care of it tomorrow.”

“You mean I can’t do it myself, right now?” he sent back.
